Chapter 5 "Drunk Mistake"
- "Regret are illuminations comes too late." –Joseph Campbell.
- This is the quote that perfectly describes Selena's situation right now.
- With her splitting headache, disgusting sour taste from her stomach, and beaten-like body, a groan left her lips.
- 'This is why I hate alcohol.' Although her whole body didn't want to move, her mind knew that she needed to stop the non-stop alarm on her phone.
- Moving her heavy arm, she searched for her cell phone.
- “Ring~Ring~Ri-“
- "Finally, it stopped," she whispered out of relief.
- Her eyes were still closed. Wanting more sleep, she slumps her head on her soft pillow.
- "Ahh!"
- However, instead of a pillow, cold, hard ground had met her face.
- Wincing as she tried to endure the torturous pain in her forehead, Selena slowly opened her eyes and looked at her surroundings.
- And at that moment, questions came over her.
- 'What happened last night? Why am I sleeping here in my bathroom? How did I even come home?'
- 'No. Most importantly, why does my forehead hurt like hell?'
- Lifting her arms, she touched her forehead and surprisingly felt a big lump. Of course, because of her tactlessness, her whole soul was awakened from the torturous pain.
- While enduring the pain, Selena racks her brain.
- 'After I got inside the tent bar and got drunk, what happened? I can't remember anything.'
- No matter how much she seeks an answer, Selena can't see anything but a blank picture. But, if there is one thing she could remember, it would be Dwaine Scoth.
- She vividly remembered it.
- Dwaine sold her out to Maxwell.
- "I had no choice, Selena. I did all of this for the sake of Mercian and our future. That's why I didn't sell you. I just let Maxwell borrow you for a while."; and his voice, which kept playing inside her mind, was enough evidence to show that what happened yesterday was not a dream. But a painful reality she needs to accept.
- Accept the reality that her first love, the gentle guy she thought wouldn't ever betray her and the one she was willing to support, had already betrayed her.
- In an instant, an unpleasing ache had pounded inside her chest.
- 'Love.'
- 'The reason why I'm still having a hard time believing it. And the reason why it hurts like hell. Is it because I love him?'
- She scoffed.
- 'Now I wonder, would my pain lessened if I didn't love him from the start? Would I curse him, file a lawsuit, and tell everyone about the unfair circumstances I'm having, just like a normal person would do?'
- At that moment, her phone rang again. Not an alarm, but a call.
- Not having the energy to see who was calling, Selena picked up the call.
- "Hello?" her voice was hoarse. "Who is this?"
- ["So, my two hundred million dollars is already awake."]
- “…!”
- One sentence and nine words.
- If the lump on her forehead was enough to wake her whole soul, those words and that familiar cold voice were enough to wake her corpse in the future.
- Sitting up and quickly ending the call, Selena stared at her bathroom wall.
- "I must still drunk," she whispered.
- Slowly looking down, she flipped her phone and looked at the screen.
- Shortly, her screen lit up. In the center, the name "Maxwell" was seen.
- Along with those seven characters, the image of his scary face popped into her mind. Her fingers automatically swipe the end button. However, barely three seconds after she ended it, her phone began ringing.
- Making her flinch as she anxiously stared at it.
- "I don't remember giving him my phone number."
- But when she uttered those words, an image flickered into her mind. And in that spurt of moment, like a miracle, memories of that night flooded through her like a flowing river.
- Eyes growing wide, Selena opened her mouth and snapped it close again.
- Soon, her voice and their voices last night slinked into her.
- "Miss Selena?" Trey shook Selena's shoulder once more. But the result was still the same.
- Grabbing the stair rails with her arms, Selena shook her head. "I won't leave!"
- A resigned expression emitted on Trey's face. It's been an hour since they stayed in the same position. Just one step from the stairs, and they would be able to put Selena inside her apartment. But like a koala, Selena persists in sticking at the railings.
- Trey stood up and decided to glance at his boss.
- Based on Maxwell's empty gaze, Trey knew that Maxwell was already at his limit.
- "Sir, I-"
- "I'll give you two minutes," Maxwell's tone was frigidly low. Moving a step forward, he said, "If you failed to get her out of that, you wouldn't get your overtime pay this month."
- It was cruel and unfair for Trey. But he had no choice but to eat the unfairness and do what Maxwell asked him.
- And when Trey thought he was certain he would lose his overtime pay, miraculously, a savior was sent to him.
- "And where do you think you're going!?"
- It was Selena who had just freed both her arms on the railings.
- While the celebratory bells rang on Trey's head, he watched Selena raise her arms in the air and tightly clutch a piece of black pants. In one smooth moment, like sliding soap on an iceberg, Maxwell's bare legs came into his sight.
- As if a strong gust of wind from Antarctica went past the three, a freezing silence penetrated.
- “…”
- “…”
- “…”
- Still unable to believe what he was seeing, Trey blinked his eyes.
- "Oh?" Selena's hand pointed to Maxwell and chuckled. "There's a big pervert birdie."
- As soon as those words left Selena, Maxwell's head turned like a rusty robot. And on his dark pupils, his silence, deep, precise gaze that Trey feared was shot to Selena.
- Soon, his threatening voice was heard.
- "You."
- Gulping, Trey snapped his mouth close. Because if he did not, he's afraid that what he might lose this time was his head.
- ……
- Gaping, Selena covered her mouth.
- She can no longer feel the banging ache in her head as the loud beats from her heart overlap it.
- The constant ringing from her phone stopped. But soon, it was followed with a message.
- [Sent Maxwell: Answer. The. Call. You. Pervert.]
- Standing up, Selena anxiously walked back and forth.
- 'It's only two days since Maxwell bought me for two hundred million for a one-day date. A day since Dwaine betrayed me and sold me to Maxwell. And a few hours since I grabbed both the devil's hair and pants.'
- What was happening to Selena's life was too fast, leaving her no room to think what to think first, and how to react to it.
- Ding~ Dong~
- The doorbell rang.
- Nowadays, because of the popularity of online shopping, it has become normal for people to assume that there's a parcel waiting every time the doorbell rings. To Selena, who was not in the right state of mind, her body automatically went towards her door and opened it. But slammed it closed again with a perplexed expression.
- "I'm seeing it wrong," mumbled Selena.
- The doorbell rang for the second time.
- With her brows creased, Selena stared at his face on the intercom.
- "Why is he here?"
