• The iridescent blue light hums around me, and under their eye-piercing brightness, I feel the skin between my scales itch along my scalp as I move my braids from one shoulder to the next. Even though I spent some of my childhood living beneath the surface, I’ve never been comfortable within my uncle’s kingdom. It has always felt unnatural for me to move beneath the earth in caverns the size of palaces.
• And this morning, we were brought to the bottom-most cavern deep beneath the palace. It is a meeting place known only to a select few, one that is sealed in all directions and can only be reached with a Moon Dragon guide because it requires traveling between spaces. Our guide had been the royal guard who pulled us here without so much as a “good morning” before yanking us out of our nests.
