Chapter 1 A Second Chance of My Life
- After my grandfather, Peter Hill, became paralyzed in a car accident, I, Celine Hill, introduced my best friend, Katie Harper, to work as his caregiver.
- Katie had studied nursing, so I naturally believed she would take good care of him.
- To my surprise, just a month later, I walked in to find my best friend dressed in lingerie, coyly sitting on my grandfather's lap.
- "Celine! If you kick Katie out today, don't ever call me your grandfather again!"
- I opened my eyes to see my grandfather sitting in his wheelchair, trembling as he pointed his cane at me. Beside him, Katie sat on the floor in her lingerie, wiping away tears with her head lowered.
- This scene... I had somehow returned to ten years ago! Shocked, I couldn't stop tears of relief from streaming down my face.
- On this very day in my previous life, I brought fruit to visit my grandfather. But when I opened the door, I saw Katie dressed in lingerie, coyly leaning against him.
- The scandalous sight left me stunned, and the fruit in my hands tumbled to the floor. Furious, I pushed Katie away, berated her, and demanded she leave my grandfather's house immediately.
- That year, my seventy-nine-year-old grandfather, Peter, cut ties with me to defend Katie.
- Using her attractive looks, Katie played the victim, whining and complaining to my grandfather daily. She eventually charmed him into buying her a seaside villa. I was furious and heartbroken when I heard the news.
- My grandfather, a construction contractor, had savings enough to own at least ten properties. Yet, when my grandmother was alive, he would scold her for buying slightly more expensive fruit, calling her wasteful. When she was diagnosed with lung cancer, he refused to pay for treatment and told the doctors to stop all efforts. By the time I learned about it, my grandmother was nothing but skin and bones, passing away in bed at home.
- My grandmother had raised me after my parents divorced, and her death left a deep scar in my heart. She spent her entire life with my grandfather, only to meet such an undignified end. Yet my grandfather, who had known Katie for less than a year, bought her a villa worth four hundred thousand dollars!
- On the day they signed the contract, Katie smugly told me, "Celine, don't blame me. This is just justice for your grandmother. What your grandfather owes her, he's making up to me."
- When my grandfather passed away, Katie inherited all his assets. At the funeral, she even showed up arm-in-arm with my husband, Nathan Wells, flaunting her triumph.
- "Surprised, Celine? After all these years of friendship, not only is your family's fortune mine, but so is your husband." Katie, dressed in designer clothing, raised her head proudly, her eyes filled with malice.
- I trembled with rage and pointed at Nathan. "You... you cheated on me..."
- Nathan, who had always been gentle and considerate, suddenly pushed me aside with a look of disgust. "Celine, I've put up with you for five years! If it wasn't for your family's money, do you think I'd ever look at someone as fat and ugly as you? Sharing a bed with you makes me sick!"
- His words cut deep, filling me with searing pain. Yes, I wasn't attractive. I had been mocked as fat and ugly since childhood. When Nathan proposed, he swore he admired my inner beauty. Thinking back now, it was nothing but a cruel joke.
- After the divorce, Nathan and I separated. During our marriage, we co-founded a company, but over the years, he slowly edged me out under the guise that women should focus on the household. A few months before, he conspired with Katie to trick me into signing a share transfer agreement. After the divorce, I was left with nothing.
- But Katie and Nathan didn't stop there. Over the next few years, they used every means to sabotage my new jobs, forcing me into unemployment and poverty. Three years later, overwhelmed by stress and exhaustion, I suffered a heart attack and died in a decrepit rental apartment.
