• After Melanie left the kitchen, I opened the low-level drawers. I kept a few knives and other tools in there in case it came in handy to, Alice not that she'd ever had any need to use them because she was protected.
• But the knowledge that she had the tools to protect herself if it ever comes to that allowed her to rest easy and it wasn't a big deal for me to do it for her. Plus, she was great with knives so I pity anyone who makes the gross mistake of underestimating her.
