- The apartment felt colder when we returned, as if the attack had drained not only our sense of safety but also the peace that, for a brief time, this place had come to represent. Gavin walked beside me, his eyes alert, shoulders tense. I knew he was trying to keep it together, but I knew my cousin well enough to see that today’s attack had shaken him more than he was willing to admit.
- We went straight to the safe room, where Lessie was. The heavy steel door slid open with a faint creak, and the scene I found pulled me out of that state of alert for a second.
