Chapter 4 The System Awakens
- Aria Bennett pushed through the glass doors of the Fifth Street System Registration Facility. The high lobby hummed with activity, filled with hopeful applicants and weary hunters.
- She approached the main reception desk where an officer sat behind a glass partition.
- "Next in line," the receptionist called out without looking up.
- Aria stepped forward and pressed her hands against the counter. "I would like to register for a System evaluation."
- The officer looked up, taking in her plain clothes and lack of equipment. "Do you have an appointment, or are you a walk-in applicant?"
- "I am a walk in," Aria replied softly. "Is there an evaluation slot available today?"
- "You are in luck," the receptionist said, tapping her computer monitor. "Go down hallway B to evaluation room four. Evaluator Davis is open."
- "Thank you," Aria said, nodding.
- She walked down the long corridor until she found room four. She knocked twice on the reinforced door and waited.
- "Come in," a tired male voice called from inside.
- Aria opened the door and stepped into a room filled with scanning equipment. A tall man in a navy uniform turned around from a control console.
- "Aria Bennett?" Evaluator Davis asked, looking at his tablet screen.
- "Yes, sir," Aria answered, stepping closer. "I am here for the baseline evaluation."
- "Have you ever been exposed to a System Zone before?" Davis asked, gesturing toward a metal platform in the center of the room.
- "No, this is my first time," Aria admitted, stepping onto the metal plate.
- "Stand still while the scanner initializes," Davis instructed, flipping a switch on the console. "The scanner checks your body for dormant interface compatibility."
- A bright blue ring of light rose from the floor, sweeping slowly over Aria from her feet to her head. A warm tingling sensation washed over her skin.
- Suddenly, a sharp chime echoed through the quiet room, sounding much louder than usual.
- A glowing blue window materialized directly in front of Aria's eyes, floating in midair.
- [SYSTEM INTERFACE ACTIVATED]
- [USER IDENTIFICATION: ARIA BENNETT]
- [LEVEL: 1]
- [ATTRIBUTE POINTS: 0]
- [UNIQUE SKILL DETECTED: THREAT ANALYSIS - LEVEL 1]
- Aria gasped, taking a small step back as the floating screen moved with her vision.
- "Well, look at that," Davis said, his eyes widening as he checked his monitor. "You actually unlocked an interface on your first try."
- "Is this normal?" Aria asked, staring at the translucent text hovering before her.
- "Most people need multiple exposures to activate," Davis explained, inspecting her console readout. "You unlocked a rare passive skill right out of the gate."
- "What does Threat Analysis do?" Aria asked, trying to read the smaller text below her status window.
- "It lets you evaluate target danger levels," Davis replied, sounding impressed. "It gives you basic tactical data about enemies and hazards."
- Before Aria could ask another question, the blue screen flashed crimson red. A new set of bold letters expanded across her vision.
- [SPECIAL MISSION OFFER: EMERGENCY ZONE RECOVERY]
- [OBJECTIVE: CLEAR LOW TIER MUTATED HOUNDS]
- [LOCATION: SHATTERED FOREST - SECTOR 1]
- [REWARD: 50,000 CREDITS]
- [WARNING: DEATH INSIDE SYSTEM ZONES IS PERMANENT]
- Aria's breath hitched as she read the reward amount. Fifty thousand Credits was the exact sum required for her mother's medical deposit.
- "What is happening?" Davis asked, noticing her stunned expression. "Did your interface display a notification?"
- "It is offering a mission," Aria whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "The reward is fifty thousand Credits."
- Davis frowned, stepping closer to her with a look of serious concern. "Fifty thousand Credits for a Level 1 user? That is an emergency clearance contract."
- "Can I accept it?" Aria asked desperately.
- "Technically yes, but emergency missions carry extreme danger," Davis warned sternly. "Low tier monsters will kill an untrained user without hesitation."
- "If I do not take this mission, my mother will die," Aria said, her voice shaking with emotion.
- "A reward that high means the risk is equally massive," Davis replied, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Do not let desperation blind you to reality."
- A flashing red clock appeared at the bottom of the translucent window.
- [TIME REMAINING TO ACCEPT CONTRACT: 00:59]
- [00:58]
- [00:57]
- The numbers ticked down relentlessly, each second bringing her closer to losing the only chance she had to save her mother.
- Aria stared at the red numbers, knowing that pressing accept meant stepping directly into a life-or-death struggle.
