Chapter 7 Naughty Mother-in-law

  • "Did you lose your tongue? I just asked you a question," he snapped his fingers in my direction, making me slowly turn to look at him.
  • "I-I was..." I stuttered, my eyes unable to meet his gaze. Damn! I had always been a blabber mouth but the words just weren't forming at that moment. I couldn't even think straight.
  • "Checking!" I exclaimed before I could stop myself. I instantly but my bottom lip, hating how I just sounded like a caveman.
  • Taking a deep breath, I said in a steady voice. "I was just checking out the briefcase. It must really cost a lot." That sounded way much better and perhaps, convincing?
  • I raised my head up, staring at his expressionless face. I badly wished to know what was going on in his mind. Did my excuse come off well to him?
  • He advanced closer to me, taking slow strides, closing the gap between us. I took a step back as he moved closer, my heart racing.
  • What was coming next? Will he throw his strong arm around my neck and strangle me? Screaming won't be an option since the room was soundproofed. I was surprised at my own thoughts, not like I was ready to die yet, but sharing the same space with a psychopath can make you lose your mind.
  • "Don't touch my stuff," he said stiffly, taking the suitcase. He stared at me with a scrunched expression. "Did you forget how to breathe too?"
  • A gasp escaped my parted lips as I squatted down, breathing through my mouth. "Breathe in and Breathe out, Ellie, you got this," I said, hitting my chest lightly, trying to reassure myself but doubt was slowly creeping into my mind.
  • I turned to look at him, he was going through his wardrobe. Was he going to change in front of me? Did he forget that there was another person in the room? I rushed into the bathroom at once, shutting the door behind me. I'd had enough drama for the day.
  • Moments later, I opened the door slowly, scanning the room. A smile tugged at my lips when I saw it was empty. I didn't have the time to think of where he went, I just needed to get the wedding gown off as it was already itching me.
  • I didn't bring any of my clothes over, not like I even had the chance too. Marley literally kidnapped me to the bride's dressing room!
  • Speaking of Marley, why hasn't he contacted me yet? I shrug off the thought immediately, that was his business to deal with. The main thing was I was close to getting revenge.
  • My eyes landed on a big T-shirt lying on my side of the bed. I blinked my eyes in confusion, moving closer to confirm if I was seeing right. Did he drop it for me?
  • Well if he did, that was considerate of him.
  • I took the shirt without a second thought, slipping into the bathroom to take a shower and get changed.
  • Feeling refreshed, I slumped on the side of my bed, closing my eyes but I was unable to sleep. My nerves didn't allow me to, even though I was tired. I would be sleeping on the same bed with a murderer, just the thought of that kept me awake.
  • I heard the door open then footsteps echoed, drawing closer. I shut my eyes tightly, pretending to sleep as I rolled almost to the edge, making sure there was enough space between us.
  • No other sound came from him again, making me open an eye if I could catch a glimpse of what he was doing.
  • I almost jumped out of the bed as my eyes met with his directly. He was squatting at my side, staring at me with those dark and unhinged eyes of his.
  • Shit! Did I forget how to breathe again?
  • I stared at him, my eyes wide like saucers while my heart was thumping crazily, he could even hear my own heart beat if possible.
  • He chuckled, a sinister smile playing on his lips. Was this the smile he put on when he wanted to kill? I clenched my first tightly in defence, waiting for him to make a move.
  • "I knew you weren't sleeping. Just wanted to confirm." He rose up and went over to the other side.
  • My heart gave a leap as he slumped on the bed. My breathing became unsteady and I was on alert just incase.
  • Minutes passed. Hours passed. I didn't know how long I layed there, not moving. Though my ribs were hurting, I just remained in one position.
  • His phone suddenly rang out, disturbing the stillness of the night.... or was it day already? He reached for his phone and picked it up. I strained my ears to listen to their conversation, but it was close to impossible as they spoke in a hushed tone.
  • Soon, Diego stood up from the bed. He went about doing his business and getting dressed. He took the suitcase before walking out.
  • It was then that my eyes slowly gave in to sleep.
  • The sun was high up in the sky, shining in its full glory and its rays hitting my face directly through the window. I stretched lazily on the bed, my body aching all over.
  • I took out my phone to check if anyone had messaged me. Not like I was expecting any, but deep down I wished Derek had begged me more. That loser.
  • [Let's find a way to meet after breakfast without creating suspicions.] It was from an unsaved number which I instantly recognized as Marley.
  • Getting out of bed, I brushed my teeth with a spare toothbrush I found in the bathroom and I washed my face too. I didn't spend so much time in the bathroom as I knew it was far in the morning already and I didn't want anyone in the family to have a bad impression of me.
  • Hold on, why was I suddenly sounding like a concerned wife who doesn't want to be hated by her husband's family?
  • I skipped down the stairs, still clad in Diego's oversized T-shirt which stopped below my knee level. Entering the kitchen, Scarlet and Jade, Marley's wife, were already preparing breakfast.
  • "My darling! Come over here!" Scarlet beckoned, opening her arms wide for a hug. "I didn't expect you to be awake so soon. Weren't you stressed yesterday?"
  • "I'm fine, ma," I answered politely.
  • "It's mom. Jade calls me mom so you should do the same too," she insisted.
  • "I'm fine, mom," I corrected myself, glancing briefly at Jade who just worked on the chopping board quietly.
  • Scarlet scanned me from head to toe, smiling brightly. I forced a smile in return, not knowing why she was grinning.
  • She held me by my shoulder, making me sit on the breakfast chair. Leaning over, she whispered in my ears, "Diego's shirt looks good on you. Did he rip off the wedding dress last night?"
  • This was it?!
  • Clearing her throat she added, "I came over to your door last night, but I couldn't hear a thing so I went back to my room." With a giggle, she said, "Or the room was properly soundproofed?"
  • Her eyes suddenly lit up. "Or your moans are the soft ones, gentle and like a singing voice?"
  • My mouth fell open in shock.
  • My mother-in-law was naughty!
