- The rain had been coming down in sheets all night, turning the cobblestone courtyard of Rafael’s compound into a slick mirror of streetlights and shadows. Valentina stood under the covered balcony, watching the rivulets trickle down, when the first set of headlights tore through the gates.
- The SUV skidded to a stop, tires hissing against wet stone. Rafael emerged from the driver’s seat before the engine had even fully shut off, his shirt collar stained dark not with rain, but with blood.
