• I felt the rough hands of Ricci’s guards close around my arms as they began to drag my body across the marble floor of the central hall. The movement sent fresh waves of fire through the knife wound between my ribs and the graze along my shoulder. Blood trailed behind me in a long, dark smear that stretched from the center of the room toward the side corridor. I kept every muscle limp and my eyes closed. My breathing stayed shallow enough that the guards believed they carried a corpse.
