Chapter 4

  • EVAN
  • Braelyn Taylor. The one girl who had my heart , the girl who didn't mind breaking it into pieces . The girl I hate with passion.
  • I expected to see her at the office. Yes , I wasn't shocked to see her working there. We were considering buying this company when I learnt from Ryan that she works here. Instantly making up my mind , I signed the papers and took over the White Enterprises.
  • When I walked in first, my eyes roamed about looking for her and ultimately stopped at one particular figure. Among many employees, there stood a girl in mute coloured clothes and her face downwards. I could feel that she was the one, Brae. I still wanted her to look up but it seemed like she was trying hard not to.
  • After the HR head introduced me, I wished the employees good morning, keeping my eyes fixed on her. As if my voice snapped something inside her and she looked up.
  • When our eyes met , I felt a shiver pass through me. That face , that same beautiful face, her brown hair hanging in waves but behind that was a pathetic woman , a bloody gold digger. I looked intently into her blue eyes, maintaining a poker face. Over the years , if anything I have mastered, it is to hide my emotions.
  • She broke eye contact and looked nervous. Good , she should be . I went on to address everyone and spoke a few words before getting to my cabin.
  • A knock on my door interrupted my thoughts.
  • " Come in." Sasha walked in.
  • " Sir, you requested me ? " I nodded.
  • " Yes , I will require a personal assistant to help me with everything."
  • " Yes Sir, that can be arranged. I will put up the news of a job vacancy and required qualifications on the company website and shortlist the candi-" I raised my hand to cut her off.
  • " No , that will take a lot of time. Besides, I want someone efficient and smart to assist me. I don't have the time to interview different applicants now." She waited for me to continue.
  • " I want someone among the employees to do the job. Bring me the files of the employees whom you think are efficient."
  • " Okay Sir. I will take your leave." She walked out and closed the door behind her.
  • Just then my phone rang in my pocket. I fetched it out to see the name on it and instantly a smile broke out on my face.
  • " Kat-" I was cut off even before I could start.
  • " You idiot! You didn't bother calling me once after you came back. Are you so busy that you couldn't even call me ? I can't believe you forgot me just like that." She ended with a sad voice. I wonder how more dramatic she can be.
  • " Done with your drama? Will you let me speak ?" I asked.
  • " Nope. You will speak, but when we meet today in the evening."
  • " Evening? I can't Kate. I have some-" She cut me off before I could reject.
  • " No , I ain't taking a no for an answer. Come on Evan, I am leaving tomorrow for France. "
  • " Uhm…"
  • " Please , pretty please!" I could imagine the puppy eyes she would pull out.
  • " Okay , tell me the place." I heard a knock on my door.
  • " The usual."
  • " I will see you today then. Got to go now."
  • " Yeah , see you." I put my phone down before responding.
  • "Come in." It was again Sasha with all the files. I gestured to her to keep them on the table.
  • After she left, I started going through the files. The second file had her name.
  • " Braelyn Taylor !" I looked through the file and her qualifications. I didn't bother looking at the other files because my mind was already made up. I smirked at the thought.
  • BRAELYN
  • "Braelyn , Mr. Lewis had called you in his office." I snapped my head up to look at Sasha .
  • "Mr. Lewis ? Why ?" The expression of pure horror was evident in my face judging the words she said next.
  • "Why are you looking like that? I am sure he had his meal and won't eat you up unless you hurry up. I bet I wouldn't see any other girl so horrified at the mention of his name." She walked away mumbling the last part to herself. Obviously, any girl would be delighted at the name of the handsome Evan Lewis but it wasn't so easy for me.
  • After having a small prep talk with myself, I got up to go to his cabin.
  • When in front of his cabin , I could feel my hands getting sweaty. With a lot of self-convincing, I knocked on the door.
  • "Come in." I heard his gruff voice. Twisting the knob, I walked in. He was looking at his laptop screen without even bothering to look up.
  • "Sir, you called for me?" I asked in a soft voice but he still didn't acknowledge me. I knew he was intentionally doing it.
  • "Sir." I raised my voice a bit more. He finally looked up.
  • " Ah! Ms. Taylor, please take a seat." Avoiding the taunting tone in his voice , I took small steps towards his desk.
  • "I don't have all the time in the world for you. Walk fast." I flinched at his sudden rise in voice . Walking hurriedly, I took a seat.
  • He leaned back on his chair , keeping his eyes fixed on me. He didn't even say anything and just kept staring. I felt intimidated under his heated stare and squirmed in my seat.
  • " Sir ?" He suddenly put his arms on the desk and pushed his upper body forward against it.
  • " Ms. Taylor, are you married ?" I was shocked as I clearly didn't expect such a question.
  • "No." The word automatically flew out of my mouth. He raised a brow at me.
  • " No ? Why ? Was it your rich boyfriend this time who left you at the altar?" I inhaled sharply, feeling the bitterness of the words.
  • " Or is it again you ? Did you find someone even richer , Ms. Taylor?" He was mocking me. I blinked away the tears accepting the pain his words had to offer. His face was expressionless but anger and heart shone in his eyes . Swallowing the lump in my throat, I opened my mouth to speak.
