Chapter 3

  • Erika's POV
  • God knew how much I wanted to stop and join them.
  • Suddenly there was a pain in my neck and I blacked out. I lost consciousness.
  • When I came around again, I found myself in my room.
  • Everything seemed normal, what happened last night was like a nightmare, but I knew nothing was right.
  • Orsen knocked me down last night, but I could guess what happened. We retreated successfully while two-thirds of my warriors could never escape from the Westford pack.
  • At this thought, tears streamed down my face.
  • Maybe they were right. I was too young for a Gamma.
  • Suddenly, the door opened.
  • Charles and Steve walked over. I knew what Steve was up to. He came to take my place.
  • Charles looked worn with dark circles under his eyes, but Steve was the opposite. He didn't even hold back his triumphant smile.
  • "Erika," Charles began to speak and his voice was hoarse.
  • I lowered my eyes and didn't dare to look at him.
  • "We had a meeting this morning. We decided that you won't be the Gamma from now on," Charles said slowly.
  • "I accept it, but I want to know who'll be the new Gamma," I mind-linked them calmly.
  • "It's me, Erika," Steve said.
  • I clenched my fist while pretending everything was normal.
  • "Congratulations. But you need to defeat me in a challenge so that you can be the Gamma." I mind-linked.
  • "Well..." Steve hesitated, the obnoxious smile on his face disappeared.
  • "That's the rule, isn't it?" I looked at Charles.
  • "But what if she?" Steve changed his face.
  • "I won't be the Gamma even if I win, but the pack needs a Gamma better than me. Only then can we become strong again." I suggested.
  • "Erika is right. This afternoon, you'll have a challenge in the arena." After thinking for a while, Charles suggested.
  • I arrived at the arena five minutes before the challenge began. It was packed with warriors, women, and even pups.
  • Everyone was curious about who would become the new Gamma.
  • I had won lots of challenges, but I was a little nervous this time.
  • "Steve! Steve! Steve…" The audience was cheering up for him. That was the reason. Normally, they would chant my name.
  • "What mistake did Erika make?"
  • "Haven't you heard about last night?"
  • "What happened?"
  • "Well, last night..."
  • "Really? But will she become the Gamma again if she wins?"
  • No. Never. I closed my eyes in agony.
  • "You'll defeat him, right?" Richard came over and talked with me. I shot him a glance and already knew what he was up to. He wanted to know something about last night.
  • "Get away or you'll know how sharp my dagger is!" I mind-linked him and took off my glove.
  • "OK, OK. You really look like that savage bloody alpha now!"
  • I glared at him and raised my arm. At this sight, he ran away immediately.
  • How dared Richard compared him with me!
  • I stood in the center of the arena, waiting for Steve to come.
  • He was already five minutes late.
  • Suddenly, I heard quick footsteps and heavy breaths behind me. A wolf was approaching me at a fast speed. It was just behind my back.
  • I turned around and dodged immediately. It was Steve. He tried to sneak attack me!
  • I shifted into wolf form and growled fiercely at him. Then I sped up and pounded on him.
  • "Well, it seems that the challenge has begun without me announcing it," Charles explained to the crowd, sounding a little angry.
  • It was a bad move for a new Gamma.
  • Steve’s wolf glowered at me. He indeed looked much stronger than me. But his slow movement was fatal.
  • I jumped up to attack him. Steve also jumped up to fight me. But I soon changed my direction and now I was behind his back. Before he realized what was happening. I jumped to his back and sank my teeth into his neck.
  • The sudden pain in his neck made him grimace.
  • He began to move wildly and tried to shake me off his body.
  • I predicted his movements. So, I jumped down from his body in time before he got wild. He turned around and glared at me, his breath accelerating. I bet he must be furious.
  • "Only one minute after the challenge began, Steve has been hurt heavily. He is pressing his wound, trying to stop bleeding. But he is still bleeding. He is at a disadvantage now. Unless he can end the challenge quickly, he stands no chance to win the challenge," the host said.
  • But no one cheered me up. The audience was silent.
  • Of course, it wouldn’t end quickly. The game had just begun. I could kill him with one blow, but he didn’t deserve a quick death. I would torture him until he begged me to kill him.
  • He jumped up and tried to slash my head with one claw. He was indeed very strong and he could knock out a strong adult wolf with one blow. So I turned around and ran quickly. I climbed on a wall, flipped in the air, and stepped on Steve’s one eye hard and my nails left two long wounds on his face.
  • I landed on the ground safe and sound.
  • "Traitor!" I mind-linked him.
  • At my words, he revealed a sly smile on his face.
  • "It's really you! Why did you give me the wrong map? Did you know how many people died because of you?" His words gave me an emotional breakdown.
  • "Because I should be the Gamma without you!" He mind-linked me as he launched another attack with a roar. I fell down and rolled on the ground to avoid his attack.
  • "What a fabulous challenge! Steve is hurt heavily but he keeps attacking. He really has an incredible tolerance for pain," the host said.
  • I rolled to the corner of the ground and got up. Blood was all over Steve’s face and neck. But he still leaped forward.
