Chapter 7 Your Husband Is No Ordinary Man!
- Although Victor said nothing at noon, Jerry's uncle had cautioned him that Victor must be someone special. It would benefit Jerry if he could somehow get to know Victor through Eileen's introduction.
- However, with the current situation, Jerry unintentionally offended the same man he wanted to impress.
- He genuinely believed Rachel's claim that her ex-husband was worthless.
- He was completely shocked and flustered.
- Jerry nervously fidgeted around, unsure of what to do. As his arm, which was initially on Victor's shoulders, fell down powerlessly, he desperately wished he could hide himself in a hole.
- Jerry knew that he couldn't afford to offend a powerful man like Victor!
- "I... I am truly sorry. I actually lied just now. It was my first time meeting Rachel, so we are not close at all... I have something else to do, please excuse me... Once again, I apologize..."
- Jerry was so anxious that he almost stumbled to the floor. Rachel could only stare at him in astonishment.
- "Jerry, stop right there. Why are you running away from a useless man like him? Do you guys know each other?" Rachel shouted at him.
- She was accustomed to scolding and insulting Victor, so it came naturally to her in that moment.
- Rachel was trying to stop him, hoping to involve him in her act, which would only make things worse. He couldn't allow the situation to deteriorate any further.
- It seemed that there was no such thing as a free lunch in this world. Rachel was just an illusion, a distraction. It was a scheme to set him up and make him embarrass himself like this.
- He didn't even dare to look up from the floor. Rachel was enigmatic and charismatic, but she was also quite foolish and oblivious.
- Victor was someone respected by Eileen, the general manager of Phoenixhive. Yet Rachel labeled him as useless out of spite.
- Alice had told him that Rachel's company was struggling due to cash flow problems, and she wanted Jerry's help. Yet Rachel not only separated from her husband, who came from a privileged background, but she also didn't know how to resolve her current predicament. She was simply a senseless woman who relied solely on her looks.
- Jerry wanted to leave as soon as possible to avoid worsening the already dire situation he was in.
- "Ms. Holden, it seems that you have misunderstood me. I really have matters to attend to at my company, so I must leave now. See you around!"
- Jerry didn't want to linger for even a second. He could already sense the animosity between Rachel and Victor.
- Victor glared at him with a venomous gaze, sending a shiver down Jerry's spine. Jerry began to jog away.
- If his uncle found out what happened, he might even beat Jerry.
- Jerry ran away without looking back. Rachel still couldn't comprehend what had just occurred.
- Jerry was fine just a moment ago, but when Victor arrived, Jerry transformed into a completely different person.
- It reminded her of the day they left the Civil Affairs Bureau and she saw Margot holding his arm. It was the day Margot proudly announced that she was now Victor's girlfriend.
- Jerry was the boss of his company, and Margot was an attractive figure. Why would they behave so strangely around Victor, who was just an ordinary citizen?
- Lost in her thoughts, Victor had already disappeared.
- She grabbed her hair and downed a glass of wine. She still couldn't make sense of the peculiar circumstances.
- After leaving the restaurant, Rachel aimlessly strolled for a while, and her legs began to ache. Upon hearing the sound of a piano, she entered a cafe named Mini Pearl Cafe.
- There were hardly any customers in the restaurant, aside from a waiter and a pianist.
- The pianist was slender and wore a blue dress. She had an enchanting presence that caught Rachel's eye.
- Rachel sat down and ordered a cup of latte. She listened to the pianist play and found herself feeling much more relaxed.
- After her performance, the pianist turned around and saw Rachel. "Aren't you... Rachel Holden?"
- "Gabrielle?" A smile appeared on her face. They were both delighted to see each other.
- "When did you return to the country?"
- "Last month. I didn't even have time to catch up with our old friends!"
- Gabrielle Chapman was Rachel's best friend at university. Rachel became teary-eyed as her emotions overflowed after suppressing them for so long.
- Gabrielle sensed the shift in Rachel's emotions. She put away Rachel's latte and snapped her fingers to call the waiter. She ordered two glasses of chilled beer.
- When they were students, Gabrielle believed in drowning one's sorrows with alcohol. When Rachel saw the beers, she immediately understood that Gabrielle was trying to cheer her up.
- They took a few sips of the beer, and Rachel started to feel tipsy. She slurred, "Gabrielle, if a man who is never poor willingly marries into another family just to endure insults and humiliation, what do you think is the reason behind his actions?"
- Gabrielle blinked hard. After contemplating for a moment, she replied, "What else could it be? He must love his wife very much!"
- After saying that, her head fell onto the table.
- "Because of love?"
- "Yes, if a man willingly accepts humiliation and takes on his wife's family name, even if he comes from a wealthy family, the only reason that would drive him to do so is that he loves his wife deeply. I can't think of any other reason!"
- Rachel froze. Did Victor truly love her?
- She used to believe that Victor was just an opportunist who wanted to make his difficult life easier by marrying into his wife's wealthy family. Could there be more to it?
- Gabrielle suddenly jumped up as if a thought had struck her. "Are you talking about Victor? Your husband is no ordinary man..."
- "What do you mean?"
- "I mean, your husband is no ordinary man. Although he dresses modestly, he exudes an impressive aura that only the talented and great possess. He's not someone an average guy can compare to."
- "I even praised you for choosing him back then, you know. You managed to attach yourself to a man with so much potential..."
- Rachel's mood worsened upon hearing Gabrielle's words.
- It was evident to everyone, including Gabrielle, that Victor stood out from the rest. How could she have missed that, even after living with him for the past three years?
- Rachel never took Victor seriously throughout their marriage.
- However, Victor had a knack for controlling his emotions. A simple smile from Rachel was enough to make him happy.
- Some time later, Rachel lost her father. Even after agreeing to marry Victor, she couldn't help but express her gratitude. She claimed to have no regrets in life anymore.
- Rachel's mind was in turmoil. She somehow managed to make it back home, but her stomach began to ache. She rushed to the bathroom and vomited.
- Afterward, she shouted, "Victor, get me some tissue paper!"
- However, there was only silence in response.
- "Victor, you idiot, what are you doing? Come to me now..." Rachel abruptly stopped herself and finally remembered that she was no longer his wife. Victor was no longer a part of her life.
- "Rachie, why are you calling out to that scumbag? He's gone. It's even creepy to hear his name. Tell me what you need, and I'll get it for you!"
- "No, thanks!"
- Rachel stood up and opened her cupboard. After searching for a while, she couldn't find any tissues. Frustrated, she slammed the cupboard door and sat down on her bed, feeling dejected. She suddenly felt exhausted.
- There was a circular lamp above her with a picture of a magpie in a forest in the center. When Victor first installed the lamp, he had told her, "This lamp won't strain your eyes. You won't feel tired looking at it..."
- When Victor was still present, Rachel would constantly criticize and insult him, and he would never fight back.
- However, when they ran into each other at the restaurant today, his eyes turned icy. They pierced through her heart like sharp blades.
- Victor's expression was blank when he saw Jerry and Rachel on a blind date. He no longer cared for Rachel. It finally dawned on her that everything had changed. Rachel felt a void in her heart.
- She closed her eyes, and tears started streaming down her cheeks.
