- The acrid scent of smoke still clung to Emma’s clothes as they stood on the empty street, hearts hammering in unison. The distant wail of sirens signaled the coming storm, but the war had only just begun.
- Lucas wiped soot from his brow, his piercing gaze scanning their surroundings. “We can’t stay here.”
