• ‘You could have come to me—you should have come to me. If we had had any sort of a marriage, if I had been any sort of a husband, I would have been there for you. I was there for you. All you had to do was ask.’ Fire blazed in Alessandro’s eyes, burning away the dazed look that she now realised had been there before. ‘Why did you not come to me? Did you not trust me?’
• That wasn’t anger in his voice. It was pain—a real, deep, soul-destroying pain. She had hurt him. Not just by running out on their marriage, on Luca, but, earlier than that, worse than that, by not trusting him, not telling him that she needed help and giving him the chance to offer it.
