Chapter 6 Jumping to Conclusions

  • Having made up his mind, Marc returned to the private room.
  • As he neared the door, he caught Oriel ridiculing Iris.
  • This woman certainly has a way of showing off. Just wait until Lucas reclaims all the gifts he gave her in a few days—her laughter will soon end.
  • Holding onto that thought, Marc swung the door open and entered.
  • "Where have you been?" Iris asked, her brow furrowed in annoyance. "Oh, just took a quick trip to the restroom," Marc responded nonchalantly.
  • "Hahaha. Did you go to the restroom? You really know how to make excuses for yourself." Oriel burst into laughter, covering her mouth.
  • "Are you upset because the Quintons gave me gifts?" she continued. "After all, the Quintons are incredibly wealthy. These gifts are something a loser like you could never imagine."
  • Marc, who had harboured resentment toward Oriel since his afternoon proposal to Iris, now saw the Quintons's public gift as his chance for revenge.
  • Marc chuckled knowingly and said to Oriel, "Are you so sure?" With a knowing smirk, Marc teased Oriel, "Are you absolutely certain? Do you really believe those gifts were intended for you?"
  • "Wasn't it clearly said that the gifts were for me, not you? Marc, you've really disappointed me!
  • "They specifically said my name. Are you having trouble hearing? Didn't you catch that?"
  • Oriel shook her head with a cold smile, looking disdainful.
  • "Now I get what they mean by jealousy. If you can't win me over, you lash out at me, Marc? That's really low!"
  • Upon hearing this, Mary became curious and asked, "What do you mean by 'can't win you over'?"
  • Oriel pointed at Marc.
  • "This loser was dumped by me, and Iris decided to pick him up."
  • Everyone burst into laughter again upon hearing this.
  • "So Iris also likes collecting trash, just like her dad! Such a striking similarity!"
  • "One's a convict, the other collects trash. Perfect match, perfect match!"
  • "Looks like Oriel has some taste after all, knowing boys who are way more outstanding."
  • "Compared to her, Iris can't even keep up!"
  • Iris's eyes reddened even more, feeling a mix of emotions. Already an outcast in the Cokes, she feared her days ahead might worsen.
  • When Iris thought about this, she tugged at Marc's sleeve and hurriedly left the private room as if escaping. Marc glared at the Cokes family members, itching to toss these losers into a frying pan and fry them up. But Iris had left, so he had to hurry and catch up with her.
  • "Hey, don't stoop to their level, honey. Your man's got your back."
  • On the way home, Marc noticed Iris looking gloomy and tried to comfort her.
  • "I'm fine," she replied absentmindedly, lost in her thoughts, not even noticing Marc calling her "honey" and "darling" repeatedly.
  • Iris's parents sat on the couch back home, crying their hearts out.
  • "Dear, my fault for reckless investments led to this situation. I'm so sorry."
  • "Dear, stop talking nonsense. This is our fate! We'll jump into the river together tomorrow, just like we did eighteen years ago."
  • Seeing this scene, Iris felt a heavy weight in her heart. With tears, she walked over and knelt before her parents.
  • "Mom, Dad, I'm sorry for letting you down. Don't worry. I'll work hard from now on to give you a better life."
  • When Cassian heard about working hard, he wiped away his tears.
  • "Yeah, I almost forgot.
  • "You still have a 12 billion cooperation deal with Vermillion Group."
  • Mirabel also wiped her eyes and said with deep meaning:
  • "Iris, now that you're married, there's nothing more we can say.
  • "Just focus on sealing this deal and let your parents regain some face in the family."
  • Iris looked distressed, but she pushed through.
  • "Mom, Dad, I have to tell you. I handed over that deal to Oriel."
  • The old couple exclaimed in unison, "What!"
  • Misfortunes never come singly. It was one thing after another!
  • "Dear, maybe it's time for us to jump into the river. We've really hit rock bottom this time!"
  • "Mom, Dad, please don't."
  • Marc quietly shook his head, took out his phone, and sneaked into a bedroom without anyone noticing. With his in-laws already irritated, he figured it was best not to make things worse. Instead, he decided to take care of something valuable.
  • "Eagle, transfer some funds from Asthar bank to acquire that Vermillion Group deal. Once acquired, rename it to Egerton Group."
  • "Marc, are you thinking of doing business? I know a bit about the Vermillion Group. Their strength is average."
  • "Don't waste time. Just get it done."
  • "Yes, Marc, I'll handle it tomorrow."
  • After hanging up the call, Marc took a moment to think. He wanted to hand this group over to Iris, but figuring out how to do it took a lot of work. Iris was principled. She wouldn't accept it if it was handed to her.
  • Forget it, he thought. Better to help her resolve the cooperation first so she wouldn't face unfair treatment within the family.
  • "Marc, what are you doing here!"
  • Suddenly, Iris's startled voice came from behind him. Marc turned around to see Iris and her parents staring at him.
  • "Oh, I was just making a call inside," Marc explained.
  • "If you need to make a call, do it somewhere else. What are you doing running into our room?" Mirabel said discontentedly, shooing Marc out like swatting a fly.
  • Marc, sweating profusely, realised he had entered his in-laws' bedroom—a bit awkward.
  • The following day, Marc woke up early with stiffness in his back. It had been almost a year since he last slept on a mattress, so it was uncomfortable.
  • Iris was also awake and whispered, "Fold up the mattress. Don't let my parents find out."
  • Being in a contractual marriage, Iris naturally didn't allow him to sleep in the bed, so she had set up a mattress for him last night.
  • Marc folded up the mattress and said, "Honey, I'll go make breakfast for you."
  • Iris glared at him. "Don't call me 'honey' in private."
  • Then she added, "You don't need to cook; my parents wake up early; they should have made breakfast already."
  • Marc nodded and followed Iris out of the bedroom.
  • In the living room, breakfast was already on the table. Iris's father sat on the sofa, watching the news.
  • This station reports that this morning at 5:45 AM, a mysterious young tycoon bought the city's largest Vermillion Group for 12 billion.
  • Iris's father looked shocked, clicking his tongue.
  • "A young tycoon; 12 billion. If only he were my son-in-law ... "
  • Seeing Marc standing beside the TV listening to the news, Iris's father rolled his eyes in despair.
  • Maybe in the next life because this life is a write-off!
  • Meanwhile, Iris's mother finished her chores in the kitchen and came out with a plate of scrambled eggs. She spotted Marc standing beside the TV and was furious.
  • "Come on, stop standing there like a log! Hurry up and come eat. I'm waiting to feed you!"
  • Marc was taken aback at her words. His mother-in-law had actually prepared breakfast for him, too. That was challenging.
  • My in-laws were not just about material things. Their hearts were still kind. In those novels, sons-in-law are often criticised by their mothers-in-law at every turn, and they even introduce other men to their daughters right in front of their sons-in-law. Most likely, it's all exaggerated.
  • After Marc and Iris took their seats, his mother-in-law rubbed her hands together, looking like she had something to say but hesitated.
  • After a while, she finally whispered, "Dear, I didn't hear a sound from your room yesterday. Is everything alright between you two?
  • "If you regret it now, there's still time. I know a young man who's always had a crush on you. He might not be as rich as Mr. Duran, but he has a few million. How about considering him?"
  • Marc almost choked on his own blood after hearing this!
  • I take back what I thought about earlier. I really misjudged the situation.
