- Jennifer told him what had happened the day before. She told him that she was almost sick thinking about it. She asked him if he could ever forgive her. Then she cried again. Jackson was so shocked by some of the things she told him that he had no words. He didn't trust himself to react until he had time alone to process this. He had learned to give himself time before he opened his mouth and made a bad situation worse. He had no doubt that his sister regretted what had happened, but he still felt all kinds of negative emotions. He felt anger, toward all three of them. He felt envy. He was disgusted by the behavior of all three of them. He couldn't be judgmental, he thought. He had done some disgusting things himself. He recalled hearing the preacher say something like, "your dirt's dirty; mine's not." That pretty much summed it up, he thought.
- Long after she had finished talking, Jackson lay on his back, his sister's head laying on the pillow next to him, her face pressed into his neck, her leg thrown over his body. His arm was around her.
