Chapter 7 The Night Everything Changed

  • "I was there the night your parents died."
  • The words hit me like a physical blow. My legs nearly gave out. For a second, I couldn't hear anything except my heartbeat loud, fast and painful. My hands started shaking.
  • "Who are you?"
  • My voice barely worked. The man looked at me sadly like he pitied me. I hated that look more than anything. Marcus stepped forward.
  • "Don't answer him."
  • The stranger ignored him. His eyes never left mine.
  • "My name is Victor Hale."
  • The name meant nothing. Absolutely nothing. Yet the fear inside my chest kept growing because this man knew things he shouldn't know. Things nobody should know. Adrian moved closer.
  • "You're making a mistake."
  • Victor laughed softly.
  • "No."
  • His smile disappeared.
  • "The mistake was made twenty years ago."
  • The atmosphere instantly changed. Even the officers looked uneasy, including me. Especially me. I pointed at him.
  • "You said you were there."
  • My throat tightened.
  • "What happened?"
  • Victor stared at me. For a moment, he seemed reluctant. Then he sighed.
  • "The truth isn't pretty."
  • "I don't care."
  • My voice cracked.
  • "I want answers."
  • For years I had accepted the official story. A car accident, a tragedy and bad luck. That was what everyone told me.
  • What if it was all a lie? Victor nodded slowly.
  • "Your parents were running."
  • The words confused me.
  • "Running from who?"
  • His eyes darkened.
  • "Dangerous people."
  • My stomach twisted. Nothing made sense.
  • "What dangerous people?"
  • Before Victor could answer, Adrian interrupted.
  • "Enough."
  • Victor looked toward him. A cold smile appeared.
  • "There he is."
  • The hatred in his voice surprised me. It wasn't an ordinary dislike. It was deeper, personal, old, very old. Victor pointed at Adrian.
  • "Tell her."
  • Silence. Adrian didn't move, didn't speak, didn't even blink. Victor laughed.
  • "That's what I thought."
  • Frustration exploded inside me.
  • "I'm standing right here."
  • My voice echoed across the harbor.
  • "Stop talking around me."
  • Nobody answered immediately. I was tired of that, tired of waiting, tired of secrets, tired of everyone deciding what I could handle. Victor looked at me again.
  • "Your father discovered something."
  • My pulse quickened.
  • "What?"
  • "A list."
  • The answer stunned me.
  • "A list?"
  • Victor nodded.
  • "A list containing names."
  • I frowned.
  • "What names?"
  • His expression became serious.
  • "Powerful people."
  • The fear inside me deepened. Something about his tone felt wrong, very wrong. The police chief suddenly stepped closer.
  • "Mr. Hale, you need to come with us."
  • Victor didn't even look at him. Instead, he reached into his pocket. Every officer raised their weapons.
  • "Don't move!"
  • Victor slowly pulled out a small silver key. Nothing else. Just a key. My heart skipped because somehow that key felt important, very important. Victor held it up then looked directly at me.
  • "Your father died protecting this."
  • The world seemed to stop. My breathing became uneven. The key looked ordinary yet everybody's reaction said otherwise. Marcus went pale, Adrian's expression hardened instantly. Victor noticed. A smile touched his lips.
  • "Now she understands."
  • "No."
  • Marcus took a step forward.
  • "She doesn't."
  • Victor's eyes narrowed.
  • "That's because you've been lying to her."
  • The accusation landed heavily. I turned towards Marcus then Adrian. Neither denied it. A painful knot formed in my stomach.
  • "What is that key?"
  • Nobody answered. Again, always again. I felt like screaming. Victor finally spoke.
  • "It opens a safety deposit box."
  • The words hung in the air.
  • "And inside that box is the reason your parents died."
  • Shock crashed into me. No! This couldn't be real. This had to be some horrible nightmare. A safety deposit box, a key, murder. Nothing made sense anymore. Victor slowly lowered his hand.
  • "The people who killed your parents have spent twenty years searching for it."
  • Fear swept through my entire body. Twenty years. My parents died because of a box?, because of a list?, because of a key? The idea sounded insane yet nobody was calling him a liar. Not Marcus, not Adrian, not anyone. That terrified me. Victor took a deep breath.
  • "Your father trusted someone."
  • His gaze shifted towards Adrian. The tension became unbearable. My pulse hammered painfully.
  • "What does Adrian have to do with this?"
  • Victor's expression darkened.
  • "Everything."
  • Adrian clenched his jaw.
  • "Don't."
  • Victor ignored him.
  • "Your father knew he was dying."
  • A chill ran down my spine.
  • "He needed someone to protect you."
  • The fear inside me exploded. No! No!! No!!! I already knew where this was going. I just didn't want to hear it. Victor pointed directly at Adrian.
  • "So he chose him."
  • The world stopped, every sound disappeared, every thought vanished. I stared at Adrian, unable to breathe, unable to move, unable to think. The stranger's voice echoed inside my head.
  • Your father chose him.
  • Suddenly everything made sense. The way Adrian always watched from a distance, the stranger protectiveness, the secrets, the lies, the marriage, all of it. I slowly turned towards him. My heart shattered all over again.
  • "Tell me he's lying."
  • Adrian remained silent. Tears burned my eyes.
  • "Tell me."
  • My chest hurt, actually hurt because the silence confirmed everything.
  • "You knew my father."
  • My voice trembled. Still nothing. The truth hit harder than any betrayal, harder than Vivian, harder than the divorce, harder than everything because this meant Adrian entered my life long before I knew him, long before our wedding, long before our first meeting. The entire relationship suddenly felt different, manipulated, controlled and planned. Fear settled inside me.
  • "What else haven't you told me?"
  • Adrian finally looked at me. Pain flashed across his face. Real pain but it wasn't enough. Not anymore. His voice came out low.
  • "Elena."
  • I stepped back.
  • "No."
  • The word broke.
  • "Answer me."
  • Before he could speak, a loud explosion ripped through the harbor. The ground shook violently. People screamed, car alarms erupted instantly. Everyone turned toward the source. A warehouse. One of the old warehouses. Flames exploded through the roof, smoke filled the night sky, chaos erupted everywhere. Officers rushed forward, Marcus grabbed my arm, Adrian moved toward me then victor smiled. A terrifying smile. The kind that made my blood run cold because he wasn't surprised, not even a little.
  • Slowly, he looked at the burning warehouse then at me and delivered the words that stopped my heart.
  • "Vivian was never the target."
  • My stomach dropped. Fear swallowed me whole. Victor's smile widened then he pointed directly at the inferno "Your parent's killer is inside that building right now."
