Chapter 1 The Bond

  • Elena Vance hesitated before the entrance of Oakridge High. It was the first day of her junior year, a period she dreaded because it required maintaining a complex deception. She had to pretend to be an ordinary human student, concern herself with academic preparation, and hide her intense animosity toward the Crescent Pack members who attended the same institution.
  • Under the terms of the regional agreement, the Redwood Pack and the Crescent Pack sent their youth to this public high school. The arrangement was intended to encourage peaceful relations on neutral territory, but it functioned as an ongoing conflict fought through social exclusion and territorial divisions.
  • "Elena! Wait for me!"
  • Elena turned as Marcus approached. He was the son of her father’s primary advisor, and her father frequently indicated that they should form a permanent alliance to secure the lineage.
  • "Hello, Marcus," Elena said, keeping her tone polite.
  • "Are you prepared to spend another year sharing space with the Crescent members?" Marcus asked, walking beside her as they entered the building.
  • "We must maintain our composure and respect the agreement," Elena replied, monitoring the hallway layout.
  • "The agreement does not prevent them from acting as though they control the institution," Marcus said, indicating the far end of the corridor.
  • Elena followed his direction and stopped. Standing by the lockers was Tahlia Blackwood, the daughter of the Crescent Alpha. Tahlia possessed a reputation for defiance, which she projected through her posture and demeanor.
  • Tahlia turned her attention toward Elena.
  • Their awareness shifted instantly. The surrounding movement of other students, the background activity, and the general environment became secondary. Elena experienced a profound internal shift, an absolute recognition that originated deep within her identity. Her inner wolf, usually passive during the day, reacted with sudden urgency.
  • The realization was immediate and undeniable.
  • Mate, her intellect acknowledged with a sense of dread.
  • Elena retreated a step, terrified by the implication. This development was a significant complication, given the political reality of their families. Across the corridor, Tahlia's expression altered. She lost her confident posture and held onto the locker behind her, appearing disoriented and alarmed as she stared back at Elena.
  • "Elena? Are you well?" Marcus asked, placing a hand on her shoulder.
  • Elena recoiled from his touch, her attention remaining on Tahlia.
  • "I am fine," Elena said, her voice shaking. "I need to reach my classroom."
  • Without waiting for Marcus, Elena walked rapidly away, her thoughts disorganized. Her instincts urged her to return, to approach Tahlia, and to accept the connection, but she knew the consequences. The bond was an absolute reality, yet it linked her to the daughter of her family's greatest adversary.
  • Elena entered her homeroom, selecting a seat in the furthest corner. She stared downward, attempting to regain her composure and suppress her anxiety. If her father or Tahlia's father discovered this connection, the consequences would be catastrophic.
  • The signal for class to begin occurred, and students filled the remaining desks. Elena kept her head lowered, hoping to avoid attention.
  • "Is this desk occupied?"
  • The inquiry was low and direct. Elena looked up to find Tahlia standing beside her. Up close, the intensity of their connection was difficult to manage. Tahlia’s expression conveyed a mixture of urgency, confusion, and caution.
  • Elena checked the room. The instructor was occupied at the board, and the other students were ignoring them.
  • "You should not remain here," Elena whispered. "Please, Tahlia."
  • Tahlia did not move. Instead, she took the seat and leaned closer.
  • "I attempted to locate a seat on the opposite side of the room," Tahlia whispered, her expression tense. "But my instincts prevented me from doing so. We do not have a choice, Vance."
  • Elena accepted the reality of their situation. They were the daughters of rival Alphas, bound by a connection they could neither ignore nor acknowledge publicly.
