Chapter 2 The Pregnant Replacement

  • The doors opened, and Maureen Vale stepped into the room with one hand resting over her stomach.
  • Alissa knew her.
  • Everyone did.
  • Maureen was the face of Vale Cosmetics, the woman photographed beside Morris at charity dinners and business launches. She wore a cream dress, soft enough to suggest innocence, and a diamond bracelet Alissa had seen in Morris’s private safe.
  • So that was where it had gone.
  • “You,” Alissa breathed.
  • Maureen lowered her eyes. “I’m sorry you had to learn this way.”
  • “Don’t apologize to her,” Morris said.
  • The command settled the previous night’s mystery with brutal certainty. This was no rumor. No trap arranged by his mother.
  • Morris had chosen her.
  • Alissa looked from Maureen’s hand to her husband’s face. “How far along?”
  • “Eleven weeks,” Maureen answered.
  • Alissa counted without meaning to.
  • Eleven weeks ago, Morris had returned from Singapore with perfume on his collar. He had kissed Alissa’s forehead and claimed
  • the scent came from an investor’s crowded party. She had believed him.
  • “You slept with her while I was taking injections.”
  • Morris’s expression hardened. “Keep your voice down.”
  • “I injected myself every night because you said we were fighting for our family.”
  • “We were.”
  • “No. I was.”
  • The fountain pen snapped from his fingers when Alissa struck it away. It skidded beneath the sofa.
  • The Dowager rose. “Control yourself.”
  • “Your son brought his pregnant mistress into my home, and you want me controlled?”
  • “Maureen is not a mistress,” the older woman said. “She is the solution.”
  • Maureen’s lips curved before she hid the smile.
  • That tiny victory cut deeper than Morris’s confession. Alissa picked up the contract and tore it through the middle.
  • Attorney Blake stepped forward. “Mrs. Horward, I strongly advise...”
  • She tore it again.
  • And again.
  • White pieces scattered across the black table.
  • “My answer is no.”
  • Morris caught her wrist before she could drop the last piece. His grip was firm, almost painful.
  • “You have no idea what you are refusing.”
  • “I am refusing to bless your affair.”
  • “You are refusing security. Your allowance. This estate. The life my name gave you.”
  • Alissa pulled free. “Your name did not give me a life. It turned me into a womb with a wedding ring.”
  • For the first time, Maureen looked uneasy.
  • Morris moved closer. “Sign, and nothing changes publicly. You remain Mrs. Horward. Maureen lives separately until the child is born. The heir carries my name, and you retain your position.”
  • “Position?”
  • “You know what I mean.”
  • “Yes. You want me smiling beside you while she gives you the child you think I failed to produce.”
  • His silence was an answer.
  • Alissa turned to Maureen. “And you accepted this?”
  • Maureen touched her stomach again. “My baby deserves a father.”
  • “My marriage deserved loyalty.”
  • “Loyalty doesn’t continue a bloodline.”
  • The words were too polished, too close to the Dowager’s language. They had rehearsed this.
  • Perhaps they had rehearsed Alissa’s humiliation too. She backed toward the door. “I will never sign.”
  • “You will,” Morris said.
  • “Is that a threat?”
  • “It is reality.”
  • His phone vibrated on the table. Then the Dowager’s.
  • Then Attorney Blake’s.
  • Three screens lit almost together. Maureen went pale.
  • Morris checked his phone, and the calm finally cracked from his face.
  • “What did you do?” he demanded.
  • Maureen’s fingers tightened over her dress. “Nothing.”
  • “Do not lie to me.”
  • Alissa’s own phone began ringing inside her handbag. Her sister’s name flashed across the screen. Before she could answer, another call replaced it.
  • Then another.
  • Her pulse climbed.
  • Attorney Blake opened a news alert. “It’s already on the financial wire.”
  • “What is?” Alissa asked.
  • No one answered.
  • She snatched the phone from his hand. A photograph filled the screen.
  • Morris and Maureen outside a private maternity clinic. His palm rested against the small of Maureen’s back. She looked up at him with glowing intimacy.
  • The headline beneath it made the room tilt.
  • HORWARD BILLIONAIRE EXPECTING SECRET HEIR WITH BEAUTY MOGUL.
  • Alissa read the first sentence.
  • Sources close to the Horward family confirm that Morris Horward and entrepreneur Maureen Vale are expecting their first child.
  • Their first child.
  • As if Alissa did not exist.
  • “You announced it?” she asked.
  • Maureen shook her head quickly. “I told no one.” Morris grabbed the phone.
  • “Blake, shut it down.” “It has been syndicated. Every major outlet has it.”
  • The mansion’s front bell rang.
  • Once.
  • Twice.
  • Then continuously.
  • Headlights swept across the drawing-room windows. Car doors slammed outside. Voices rose beyond the gates.
  • The press had arrived.
  • Alissa’s phone buzzed with a message from her sister. Please tell me this is fake.
  • Another came from a university friend. Are you okay?
  • Then a news clip loaded automatically. A presenter stood before Alissa’s wedding photograph while a red banner crawled beneath it.
  • SUCCESSION CRISIS ENDS FOR HORWARD DYNASTY.
  • “Ends,” Alissa whispered.
  • Her diagnosis envelope lay unopened beside the shredded contract. The world had already decided what she was.
  • The barren wife. The discarded wife.
  • The obstacle between a billionaire and his heir.
  • Morris turned on Maureen. “Who knew about the clinic?”
  • “Only my doctor and your security team.” Her eyes glistened instantly.
  • “You can’t think I wanted Alissa hurt.”
  • Alissa laughed, sharp and empty. “You came into my house wearing my husband’s diamond.”
  • Maureen covered the bracelet. Too late.
  • A crash sounded in the foyer. Someone outside shouted Morris’s name.
  • The estate manager hurried in.
  • “Sir, the reporters breached the first gate. Police are on the way, but they’re livestreaming.”
  • “Close every curtain,” Morris ordered.
  • “They saw Mrs. Horward’s car arrive. They know she is inside.”
  • Attorney Blake stepped between Morris and the window. “We need one statement immediately. Silence will let them define the story.”
  • “There is no story,” Alissa said. “There is an affair.”
  • Morris looked at her.
  • Not with regret. With calculation. “Blake is right.”
  • Alissa’s stomach dropped. “What are you going to say?”
  • He buttoned his jacket. The transformation was instant. Husband disappeared. Chairman returned.
  • “I will protect my child.”
  • “By destroying me?”
  • “By controlling the facts.”
  • Maureen slipped beside him. Their shoulders almost touched. It looked natural.
  • That hurt most.
  • The estate manager opened a tablet showing the live feed from the gates. Thousands of viewers became tens of thousands as comments raced past.
  • Morris walked toward the foyer.
  • Alissa blocked him. “If you make her pregnancy public, there is no taking it back.”
  • “It is already public.”
  • “Then deny she is your partner. Tell them I am still your wife.” He studied her face.
  • For one heartbeat, Alissa saw the man she had loved.
  • Then Maureen whispered, “Morris, our baby.”
  • The softness vanished.
  • He stepped around Alissa and opened the front doors. Camera flashes exploded through the foyer.
  • Questions crashed over one another.
  • “Mr. Horward, is Maureen Vale carrying your heir?”
  • “Is your marriage over?”
  • “Did Alissa know?”
  • Morris raised one hand. The crowd fell quiet.
  • Alissa stood behind him, unable to breathe, as Maureen took his arm before the watching nation.
  • Morris looked directly into the nearest camera.
  • “Yes, Maureen is carrying my child,” he said. “And tonight, my family has decided that she will become my...”
