Chapter 23 Understanding Pain

• Leonardo hadn't meant to stay. He'd intended to deliver the standard condolences, the hollow words people expected when death touched their lives, then retreat to the safety of his study where emotion could be locked away like everything else that threatened his control.
• But Isabella's raw grief had stopped him at the threshold. The sight of her curled on the bed, face streaked with tears, body shaking with sobs that seemed to hollow her from the inside, it cracked something in the fortress he'd built around himself.
