Chapter 5 Am I Too Old For You?

  • I did not avoid Damien’s probing gaze. I boldly stared into his eyes and said to him, “I don’t mind.”
  • My father promised me that if I married into the Reid family, he would return my mother's dowry.
  • Even if I entered the door one day and divorced the next, I would still agree.
  • Seeing him now, I had already figured everything out.
  • Clearly, he could stand up, but he came to the Monroe family in a wheelchair.
  • It had to be because of the woman in the fitting room.
  • He didn't want to go through with this arranged marriage.
  • He wanted the Monroe family to back out of this marriage first.
  • But he didn't expect Blake to be willing to sacrifice me, the unloved daughter, to fulfill the agreement.
  • Damien's gaze sent chills down my spine, and my heart filled with bitterness. Why would I want to marry into the Reid family?
  • If I didn’t agree to this engagement, how could I return to my country and reclaim what my mother lost?
  • With a slight smile on my lips, I said, "We were betrothed since childhood. No matter how you turn out, I should marry you.”
  • Damien's gaze darkened slightly, perhaps not expecting me to say that.
  • My father, seemingly afraid that Damien might change his mind, immediately asked, "What about the wedding date—"
  • Damien remained indifferent. "Of course, according to the agreement. This was decided by both families long ago. How can we break it?"
  • Dad smiled broadly upon hearing Damien's response. "That's great, Mr. Reid, stay for a meal."
  • “No need. I have something else to do.” Damien looked at me. "Miss Monroe, are you free?"
  • Although it sounded like a question, his tone left no room for refusal.
  • I nodded in response to his words, sensing that he had something to discuss with me.
  • Just then, I also wanted to talk to him.
  • Dad warned me with a look. "Be careful."
  • He was probably worried I might offend someone before marrying into their family.
  • I knew that if the Monroe family could connect with the Reid family, it would be beneficial for the Monroe family.
  • But where did he get the confidence that I would help him after marrying into the Reid family?
  • Just because he was my father? Had he ever treated me like a daughter? Does he know how I have spent the past eight years?
  • As I was lost in thought, my head suddenly hit a hard "wall."
  • I quickly snapped out of it, raised my head, and found that impeccable face, so close, looking down at me.
  • I glanced at his leg.
  • He actually stood up.
  • Indeed, he was pretending to be lame.
  • So, my guess was correct.
  • I felt a chill as he stared at me, his eyes seemingly able to see through me, making my heart race and my whole being feel like it was being held tightly by invisible hands, causing me to suffocate.
  • I gritted my teeth and put on a calm face. "I was engaged to Mr. Reid when I was two years old. Did I know about money and the benefits of being a wealthy wife at that age? Did I force both mothers to arrange this for me when I was two?"
  • He listened without any expression.
  • I paused, trying to soften my tone. "When I was two years old, Mr. Reid was already ten, eight years older than me. Did I ever say you were too old?”
  • My hand, hanging by my side, clenched tightly. The only reason I married into the Reid family was to fulfill my father's promise to return my mother's dowry.
  • I didn't want to be enemies with this man. I lowered my tone and lowered my posture. "Mr. Reid, I know you don't want to marry me, but it's not impossible—"
  • I deliberately stopped to see his reaction. His expression changed ever so slightly, but I caught it.
  • He wasn't angry, so there was still a chance.
  • I quickly added, “Mr. Reid, let’s make a deal.”
