  • The house was quiet. Tessa was off at Chloe’s sister’s place for the weekend, and Chloe had gone to work, leaving me in a strangely heavy silence. My fingers curled around the ceramic rim of my coffee mug as I sat at the kitchen table, sunlight spilling through the blinds in broken slats, stripes of warmth brushing over my bare arms. Outside, birds chirped obliviously, the neighborhood going about its day like my world hadn’t tilted on its axis.
