Chapter 14 Tomorrow

  • He looked back up at Ada. Her face was etched with fear, every bone, every expression. All fear-filled. Her breath seemed caught in her throat, her eyes wide, shimmering as though they might spill over at any second. The world around them—the noise of shoppers, the hum of voices—faded as their gaze locked.
  • Ada stared at him. His face was incredibly pale, his features rigid, as though he were holding himself back from an explosion of emotion. His hands clenched at his sides, knuckles white. Oh shit, she thought. This is it. There’s no way to hide anymore.
  • “I’m so sorry,” she whispered, voice trembling with the weight of years of secrets, before grabbing Pandora’s arm and rushing out of the store. Her heart pounded so loudly in her chest, she felt sure Tarquin could hear it. Her legs moved on instinct, weaving through the crowd as she aimed for the taxi rank, the chill of autumn air stinging her cheeks as she stepped outside.
