• The buzzer’s metallic hum rattled inside Selena’s chest. The glass cage door slid open with a hiss, the sound too smooth, too clean for what she knew was about to happen. Two guards stepped in, faces blank, movements efficient. They untied the prisoners from their chairs only to slam them to the ground, forcing them on their knees.
• Selena’s stomach lurched. She gripped the edge of the oak table until her knuckles turned white.
