- 7..
- Mum, are we in trouble?..
- After so many attempts to convince Reid, he finally agreed to go shopping and enjoy the rest of his birth-day hours..
- Nanny Precious did most of the job while I sat in a corner, sipping a cup of drink for a very long while with my mind reeling with different thoughts.
- The worst thing was that I had no one to talk to nor get some advisory words from. I hadn't communicated with my family since I left also, so I was just alone.
- "I'm so tired" Reid yawned, hugging me from behind as I drove home.
- "We're almost home, okay?" I spoke to pretend like I wasn't deep in thoughts.
- "If dad was here, he'll do the driving while I sleep on your lap" he muttered, yawning again.
- I sighed, tightening my grip around the steering wheel.
- Reid talks about his father was getting too much these days and it was bothersome, especially now that his father was about to have his own family without any memory of us..
- "Even if he won't accept me, at least, he should accept Reid" I'd muttered inwardly while at the mall and I knew those words were far from what I wanted.
- I had no idea while I spewed them out in fact..
- I mean, even if Reid ever gets accepted, how was I going to tell him that he's from a home where his parents would have different partners?..
- Gawd..
- Who was going to have Reid by their side in fact, Me or Alex?..
- Those thoughts were just so bothersome!
- "Are your nanny's laps forbidden to rest on?" I gave his statement a response
- "No but a nanny isn't part of a nuclear family. I don't want to make plans for people who aren't my family" he smartly replied.
- "Reid!" I cautioned, slowing down a bit to pass over the road bump.
- "What mum?, I'm only telling the truth and besides, nanny is fast asleep so she didn't hear me" he replied..
- We conversed for a few more minutes before finally arriving at our destination --home.
- "Wake your nanny up and alight" I instructed, turning off the car engines.
- "Are you expecting visitors in uniforms?" His response short-lived my intention to pack up my things into my bag, as my hands literally stopped in the space.
- "Why ask such a question?" I asked back, raising a brow.
- "Because we have uniformed men standing right infront of our apartment" he replied and for the first time since we got home, I looked towards the main entrance.
- Just as he said, two men in similar uniforms were standing right infront of the building and for a second, I feared that they were government officials, coming in person to query me regarding my citizenship application which I was still processing.
- "Who are these?" I mumbled, opening the car door immediately and proceeding to alight.
- "Remain in the car," I told Reid.
- I was definitely not going to expose my son to strange men. Uniformed or not, they were still strange and my prediction regarding their identity isn't even confirmed yet..
- "Hello, how may I help you?" I requested as I approached them.
- "We're here with a message for Ms. Adeline Peace" one of them responded.
- Oh yeah, I'd let go of dad's name since I left home and decided to adopt a simple name as a last name for myself and son.
- One of the things I was trying to avoid was being traced. Maybe.. just maybe, dad or mom would try finding me one day and my new surname would certainly limit their search's result – hopefully though.
- "That's.. that's me. What message do you have?" I stuttered a bit while confirming my identity.
- My car's closed windows were tinted so they definitely had no idea who was still in.
- Yeah, Reid was safe with his sleeping nanny. I had turned on the air conditioner before alighting, a few moments ago.
- "It's a message from Ms. Sarah Donalds, your boss." The other man spoke for the first time while his colleague handed me a brown envelope. I needed not to be told with what they had just said, that they were Sarah's agents in uniform..
- "Okay.." I slowly collected the stuff, wondering why Sarah had sent a letter ..
- She was crazy, yes.
- Had she decided to cancel my suspension after realising how much she couldn't do without me?..
- There was only one way to confirm. I unsealed the envelope immediately, feeling so certain that Reid was watching me from the car.. and maybe, his nanny.
- Immediately my eyes sighted words in red colour in the medium-sized sheet, I knew my predictions were totally wrong.
- Sarah prints letters in red colour when a staff member is in trouble.
- Gawd..
- What was up again?..
- Only one thing attracted my attention and that was the only capital-letter sentence which was even the letter's heading.
- My heart skipped a beat as I began to read.
- 'ORDER TO VACATE COMPANY'S HOUSE AND CAR TILL SUSPENSION IS OVER!'
- Okay!!!
- My heart literally stopped beating this time.
- What the hell?!
- "We've been waiting for your return for the past two hours. So now that you've got this message, get your son out of that car and hand it's keys alongside the house's over to us." the first man instructed on noticing my expression..
- I wasn't even bothered by the fact that he knew I had a son in the car, that didn't matter at that point..
- I needed to confirm something! and that was what mattered.
- "Am I to vacate the house and car now?, Like right now?" I demanded fearfully, anticipating a clarification..
- "Yes, right now!" the duo chorused.
- I gasped.
- "What?!"
- "You aren't allowed to take anything too" the second man added, worsening the situation with his statement.
- "My God!" I exclaimed, even while I'd suddenly lost my voice.
- "You can't do this to me. My son and --"
- "Madam please we've been waiting for so long, get your son out of the car and give us the keys" the first man interrupted, switching into a harsh tone.
- "This isn't right. It's against the law in fact, you have to give me at least seven days to pack out" I tried defending but I guess that only worsened matters.
- The second man lost his patience too and without warning, he walked over to the car, opening it roughly.
- Right before my eyes, Reid and his nanny were dragged out of the car like they had done something wrong and the poor kid had to burst into tears while saying 'Mum are we in trouble?'
- I guess we were really in trouble.
- Precious on the other hand had definitely gotten a clue of what was going on and if she hadn't... Well, at least her mentality was better than a five-year old.
- "Hand the keys over!" the order came fiercely.
- This time, I couldn't fight back my tears. I couldn't even hide them from Reid. They got the freedom they demanded alongside my runny nose.
- "Don't let's take it the hard way, cooperate!" The first man spoke again.
- At this point, I could no longer resist things..
- I had to do it helplessly -- drop the car and house keys in his hands.
- Then, my eyes met with Reid and at the same time like it was planned, our tears slipped out...
- Oh heavens..
- Why on my son's birthday?..
