- "About time you decide to join the world of the living," Elvira said when Cecilia came downstairs the following morning, her hair seemingly going in every direction at once, still clad in her red satin pyjamas. "Midsummer celebrations down at Disa homestead starts in less than two hours, and you know how Aunty Krissy gets if we're even a minute late for the opening ceremony. I do not want a repeat of last year."
- Cecilia yawned, and grumbled out some sort of "Mmmh" in acknowledgement, her eyes still only half-open. The sun was already bright enough to bathe the kitchen in warmth, and there was barely a cloud to be seen in the sky. She grabbed the white bread from the counter, and the Nutella from the fridge, then joined her father at the table. Charles was attempting to do his crossword puzzle, though Elvira's constant interruptions meant he made little progress, and his frustration was clearly visible on his features - his forehead more creased than usual. He was starting to look like an old man, despite having just recently turned 50. Elvira had aged more gracefully, though she had been struck with the curse of having lunch-lady arms and a muffin-top that could give someone diabetes.
- Approaching her daughter, with a cautious tone of voice, Elvira looked as if she was about to poke a sleeping bear as she spoke. "The resemblance really is uncanny. Between you and Fredrik's girlfriend, I mean. Earlier this morning, when they came downstairs holding hands, I felt my insides turn into a knot for a brief moment." She swallowed. "I think my subconscious thought it was you he was acting so cosy with, looking as snug as a bug in a rug. It's.. Unsettling."
