• I didn't know what to say, so I decided to also take my leave. I left the room in silence, and I felt all their eyes on me as I made my way out into the hallway. I had hoped Hailey might still be close enough that I could follow after her, but there was no sign of her when I got through the doorway.
• I made my way hopefully into our room but my heart sank when I realized I was alone in there. With no other ideas of where she might have gone (since we were away from all of her usual hiding spots), I sighed and closed the door behind me.
• A sudden thought occurred to me, and I raced across the room to lock the door that adjoined my parents' room, just to ensure they didn't try to come in and check on me. If I couldn't be with Hailey right now, then I just wanted to be alone.
