• Cal was studying the strange tangles of machinery embedded into the ceiling, almost resembling equipment from the car workshop he'd recently been hired at, or factory floors he'd worked in previously. If this really was a game of some kind, he wondered if it was an artificial reality setup, controlled by their real-world movement - but he saw no obvious display or headsets.
• This sort of thing could only happen to Tess. Most people barely got functional pipes or a leakless roof when they bought property at auction, but she'd happened upon a whole extra room of gadgets. Cal had always considered her a perennial mess, too chaotic to maintain a relationship or any stable job and enabled by an inordinate trust fund. Yet, things always turned out just fine for her. Being drop-dead gorgeous surely helped: tall with caramel skin and glossy curls, her impossibly expressive eyes surrounded by a constellation of faint freckles, made all the more dangerous by dimples that materialised with her frequent smiles. Her free time afforded plenty of athleticism, giving her a lean build while retaining a little thickness in all the right places. Today she was dressed impractically as ever, in a long yellow sun-dress, white sneakers and sporting garish dangly gold earrings - not quite the attire for unloading storage.
• "Uh, maybe we should try and find a manual or something first?" Cal suggested, at last responding to her question. He looked around the place for paperwork, brushing his hand over a sticker labelled 'Nefarium Systems' on the side of the console, but found nothing else useful. He thought back to the advice he had given his sister, and questioned if maybe crazy finds like a hidden room made the gamble of buying decrepit houses worth it. He wouldn't know until he could be sure exactly this one was for.
