Chapter 55 : Bad surprise

  • James:
  • “Yes Clarice, how are you?” I answered the call. Clarice, my dear mom would religiously call up every single day to check up on me. I was adopted when I was two from Wichita’s children home in Kansas, ever since then she has smothered me with all the love any child could possibly receive but for some reason, I could never seem to reciprocate.
  • “I’m good son, how are you? Did you have your dinner? What did you eat?” Classic maternal questions every mother asks their children.
  • “Mom, I will be turning 30 next month, you have to stop treating me like a child!” I protested. Here I was talking to diplomats, republicans and international directors on a daily basis and on the other hand being asked what was on my menu. Arghhh!
  • “I shall stop treating you like a child after you get married, I will be relieved of all my duties and you will be her burden to bear!” she teased lovingly.
  • “Mom, what if I tell you that I have found someone I might end up marrying!?” I nervously pitched in a softening down. Although I had already made up my mind, she was one of the very few people whose opinion truly mattered to me.
