Chapter 3 Unexpected Uncle
- Lila's back tensed for a moment, her heart skipping a beat, before she forced herself to calm down.
- Did he see it? Did he see the way she looked just now? The coldness on her face quickly disappeared, replaced by a suitable surprise and awkwardness, the demeanor a junior should have.
- She slightly bowed to Julian, her voice soft and with a hint of nasal tone as if she had just been wronged, "Uncle."
- Julian set down his glass, lightly tapping the bottom on the table, his voice not loud but very clear.
- He didn't say anything, just looked at her, his eyes deep and intense, making Lila's face tighten as if the facade she put on could fall off at any moment.
- His gaze made her uncomfortable. Lila avoided his eyes, lowering her gaze, "It's getting late, I... I should go back first."
- She just wanted to leave quickly, to get away from this inscrutable man.
- "I'll take you." Julian's voice was not loud, but the meaning behind his words was clear and not something that could be easily refused.
- Lila stopped in her tracks. The refusal was on the tip of her tongue but she swallowed it back, not wanting to be too obvious.
- She raised her head, with a hint of caution and politeness on her face, "It's not trouble, Uncle. The driver is waiting outside, it's quite convenient." This tone was exactly what a niece-in-law who had just been wronged and faced with a dominant elder should have.
- Julian scrutinized her for a few seconds, his eyes sharp. After a while, he nodded slightly and didn't insist further, "Alright then."
- Lila breathed a sigh of relief in her heart, said no more, nodded at him, and quickly walked away.
- The sound of her high heels on the carpet was muffled. It wasn't until she walked out of the banquet hall, feeling the cool wind on her face, that the indescribable pressure dissipated a bit.
- But Julian's eyes kept flashing in her mind.
- This little uncle was much more troublesome than Andrew.
- Not far away, a black Bentley was quietly parked on the side of the road, its headlights shining brightly in the night. It was the car sent by the Morgan Family to pick her up.
- As she was about to walk over, her phone in her pocket vibrated, and the screen displayed the name "Elena." Lila furrowed her brows imperceptibly.
- She answered the call, placing the phone to her ear, her voice neither warm nor cold, "Hello."
- On the other end of the phone, Elena's voice was low, but the commanding tone was still there, "Lila, has the wedding ended?"
- "Hmm, just finished." Lila responded, still looking at the car.
- "Well, that's perfect," Elena paused for a moment, her tone becoming firmer, "Now, bring me the ring you have on your hand. Figure out a way to get it to me, either by yourself or have the driver make a trip, hurry up. I'll have someone send a fake one to you, wear that."
- Lila tightened her grip on the phone. Really give it to her, and wear a fake one herself? Quite convenient. She lowered her eyes, covering up the hint of mockery in them, her voice still flat, "Got it."
- "Also," Elena's voice sounded a bit tense, with a warning, "Remember, don't let Andrew touch you at night! Got it? Just for a year, don't cause any trouble for me!"
- Lila found it a bit funny. Andrew? He couldn't even avoid her. Elena was taking her too seriously, or rather, she was overestimating Andrew.
- "I got it." Lila replied indifferently, not showing any emotion.
- "Good. Hurry up and bring the ring." Elena seemed a bit relieved and hung up in a hurry.
- Listening to the busy tone on the phone, Lila expressionlessly put the phone back in her pocket. Her fingers subconsciously rubbed the cool platinum ring on her ring finger, stiff and tight like a shackle.
- She glanced at the Bentley again, just a car a moment ago, but now it looked like a luxurious cage.
- Taking a deep breath, she suppressed the chaotic thoughts in her mind, and the tired look with a hint of gentleness returned to Lila's face as she walked towards the car.
- The car smoothly left the banquet venue.
- Lila leaned back in the back seat, closing her eyes to rest.
- "Could you please go back to the Swift Family first, I need to get something." She told the driver, her voice still in the soft tone of "Elena".
- The driver nodded, turning the steering wheel as the car merged into the flow of traffic in the night.
- The Swift Family villa was brightly lit, but cold.
- Lila went straight upstairs, ignoring the inquisitive looks of the servants.
- In Elena's room, the servant who had come to deliver the fake ring was already waiting, looking a bit impatient.
- The handover was quick, not a word was spoken.
- Lila watched as the platinum diamond ring on her ring finger was taken off and replaced with a light, fake one, the luster looking ethereal.
- It was ridiculous, the young mistress of the Morgan Family wearing a fake ring.
- She rubbed the fake ring with her fingers, cold and expressionless, then turned and went downstairs.
- Returning to the old mansion of the Morgan Family, the living room was still lit.
- Andrew's mother, Emma, sat on the sofa, well-maintained and elegant.
- Seeing Lila come in, she smiled politely and courteously, "Back already? Tired from the wedding, I bet. Have a seat."
- Lila sat down and replied with a smile, "Thank you for your concern, Mom."
- Emmanodded approvingly as she looked at her, seeming quite satisfied with this new daughter-in-law, or perhaps just satisfied with this marriage alliance.
- She didn't ask where Andrew was, only exchanged some pleasantries and had the servant prepare supper.
- "Madam, your supper." A young maid brought a tray over, her tone flat but her eyes filled with disdain as she roughly placed the tray on the coffee table, spilling a few drops of soup.
- Lila didn't even lift her eyelids, just staring at the soup stains.
- Another older maid walked over, muttering "clumsy," but casually wiped the table with a cloth.
- Emmaacted as if she hadn't seen anything, picked up her teacup and took a sip.
- Lila found it amusing.
- Was this the Morgan Family's way of asserting dominance? Even the servants dared to show her attitude.
- Well, since Andrew didn't like her, these people naturally followed suit.
- Normally, she would have been impatient long ago. But now, she was "Elena," the legitimate new mistress of the Morgan Family, at least on the surface.
- She couldn't lose her composure, nor could she be weak and let others manipulate her.
- Quickly calculating in her mind, a hint of appropriate grievance appeared on Lila's face, and her brows lightly furrowed.
- She didn't look at Emma, her gaze only on the annoying soup stains on the coffee table, before looking up at the young maid.
- Her voice was soft, with a hint of entitlement: "Oh my, how careless. It's spilled everywhere. How can I drink this? Go, bring me a new bowl."
- This statement was neither submissive nor disrespectful.
- The young maid was visibly stunned, not expecting her to speak up directly. She subconsciously looked at Emma, lips moving as if to say something, "Madam, I..."
- "Hmm?" Lila raised her chin slightly, interrupting her, a hint of impatience in her eyes, her voice still gentle but the displeasure evident on her face, "Didn't understand? "
- "What's going on?" A deep male voice suddenly came from the hallway.
- Lila's heart skipped a beat, and she looked up.
- Julian had returned at some point, standing there and taking off his suit jacket to hand it to the butler.
- His gaze swept across the living room, finally stopping on her and the frozen maid, furrowing his brow.
- Emma immediately stood up, smiling gracefully, "Ah Julian, how come you have time to come back."
- The servants also changed their expressions, bowing their heads and calling out "Third Master."
- Julian didn't say a word, just glanced at the young maid, didn't say anything, but his eyes were enough to scare her, the maid's face turned pale, quickly picked up the tray, "I'm sorry, Madam, I'll redo it right away!" With that, she ran off.
- Lila lowered her eyes, hiding her surprise.
- Why was he here? The Morgan Family's old mansion was not a place he usually stayed.
- And, just now... was he helping her out?
- What does this little uncle want to do in the end?
