• I watched as she went to the cabinet and returned with a large piece of ginger root. I didn't know why, but it made me nervous. She set the ginger down on the counter in front of me. Then she grabbed a cutting board, a paring knife and a vegetable peeler. My nervousness shot up. After she explained my task, it didn't calm me down.
• "Your punishment," Mistress began, "is that you are going to learn about figging."
• "What is figging?" I asked knowing it had something to do with the ginger.
