• That afternoon we went with our mom to the mall. She said she had to find a new outfit for some country club event, so we came along just to wander around the stores and maybe go to the food court and stuff.
• Mom was in Dillard's or Macy's or something while Allie and I wandered from store to store. At one point, when we were walking around at Brookstone gawking at the ridiculous products, Allie casually took my hand in hers and held it as we walked. She didn't intertwine fingers with me, just held my hand in "The Christian Way" as my friends and I joked in high school. Because everyone knows that serious hand-holders intertwine fingers.
• I gave her a look and she smiled at me confidently, sort of defiantly. Then, without either of us thinking about it (at least I know I did not), we each leaned forward and kissed each other on the lips briefly. We continued walking around the store hand-in-hand, joking around about the silly merchandise lining the walls and cluttering the floor. When we left Brookstone, we disconnected our hands, just in case our mom or someone else familiar were to see us. But we found out on the way home that we had already been spotted.
