- Lizzette heard Mistress Diana's words, but they didn't sit right with her. It felt wrong, and the feeling gnawed at her. She hadn't quite realized how taken she had been with notions of giving herself up for love. There was a conflict within her. She could completely resign herself to the thought of being taken. That was in fact her reality. It was no violation of her notions of love to allow herself to be taken. It was honorable. She knew she had no choice in the matter. And if she were to be taken, then to have it happen at the hands of one such as the King was something of a thrill. She was still a good girl. She was simply doing her duty, and if it excited her, well that could be her secret. But to participate actively, as Mistress was suggesting, that seemed somehow too far, too much. How could she give herself so completely with no promise of love?
- These thoughts consumed her as she lay in bed the night after first practice. The next day, Lizzette's performance in their practice sessions, at first promising, began to fall off. Her heart was no longer in it. Diana noticed. She tried to push and encourage her to give more, but it seemed to no avail.
- On the third day after her arrival, the King, anxious and eager to sample Lizzette's charms, inquired with Mistress Diana as to her progress. "How is our little bakery girl?"
