Chapter 8 Tragedy 5

  • “For this reason, the management will not wish to dismiss you from her services, rather we are giving you the honor to resign honorably within the next twenty-four hours. This meeting is hereby closed.”
  • “That’s right.”
  • The International Vice Chairman mumbled audibly and his wife, Dora, who had been resting after she got off her restaurant, asked.
  • “What happened, hubby?”
  • “Jeff had taken the decision that I would have taken if I was there.”
  • “Oh! Is it work related matters?”
  • “Yes.”
  • She continued with her rest while her husband concentrated on the meeting.
  • While Jeff was about to get off the table, Mr. Morris walked in unannounced. His appearance did not make much difference because Jeff represented his presence. He walked to his swivel chair and took his seat.
  • “Welcome, Mr. Morris.”
  • Leon, who had been sitting quietly on the couch, greeted.
  • “Thank you, Leon.”
  • Then, the team got off the conference table and greeted the Chairman before exiting. Mr. Priestley, who was shocked, could not raise his head. He greeted him all the same before he took his leave.
  • “Mr. Ferguson, we would visit the island soon.”
  • Jeff informed before he left.
  • “It is noted, Mr. Israel.”
  • Now, Mr. Morris looked at the worried Jeff and consoled.
  • “Don’t be too hard on yourself. You have taken the right decision by asking him to resign rather than sack him.”
  • “Thank you, grandpa. I wish to visit the Island to see things for myself.”
  • “We will go together. Your grandmother insisted that I should be by your side.”
  • Mr. Morris gave the explanation to assure him that he was not doubtful of his competency. Then, Jeff smiled and accepted his grandmother’s decision.
  • “Oh! That is thoughtful of her. We can be on our way if you are not too busy.”
  • “It is all right. Leon, you can go home. We will not be long.”
  • “I will, Mr. Morris.”
  • They got off the office and Leon left for home with their aids and securities. Then Mr. Morris looked at his Chief Security Officer, Mr. Valentine Noble and instructed.
  • “I am going to the island, send the security team ahead and come with me.”
  • “Consider it done, Mr. Morris.”
  • Then, Mr. Morris and Jeff walked to the helicopter hanger and waited for the Chief of Security, who was trying to mobilize his men. Afterwards, they got into the helicopter cockpit and Mr. Morris decided to cheer him.
  • “Jeffrey.”
  • Jeff, who was expecting an instruction from him, turned to his right, gave him a quizzical look and responded.
  • “Yes, grandpa.”
  • “Did you remember my words the day we bought your first car?”
  • Although, he was not in the right frame of mind, but he smiled when he saw the smile on his grandfather’s face. Then, he furrowed his brows and thought for a while and inquired.
  • “Was it when we were having dinner at your Lounge?”
  • “Yes.”
  • Jeff smiled broadly and said.
  • ”Yes, I remember. You said cars are for little girls like Jewel, that I will only fly airplanes, private jets and the rest.”
  • “I am happy that you remembered. Now, you are flying airplanes and the rest.”
  • “Yes, grandpa. Thank you for believing in me.”
  • Then, the Chief Security Officer got into the helicopter, and they flew off.
  • The disgruntled Mr. Priestley walked back to his office with a heavy heart. Before he could take his seat, his phone rang. He looked at the caller and shook his head in dissatisfaction before he picked the call and greeted with a husky voice.
  • “Hello, Mr. Israel.”
  • “What have you done, Mr. Priestley? Do you expect that I should supervise you the way I supervised Mr. Alexander when he handled the Shelter Home project? I expected that, as an insider, you should do better. Thank you for disappointing me.”
  • (Cut.)
  • Now, Mr. Priestley fought back the moist in his eyes and clenched his teeth in anger. Later, he swiped his phone and made a call.
  • At the Island.
  • Dr. Williams and Dr. Brooklyn were in the clinic inspecting the victims when Jeff landed.
  • “I will be back, Mr. Morris.”
  • The security announced before he got off the helicopter. Then, he surveyed the environment before he got to the clinic and to get a situational report.
  • “Good day, Dr. Williams.”
  • Dr. Williams recognized that with his presence, the Chairman must be around. To keep his visit away from Dr. Brooklyn who was not aware of the existence of any other Chairman except Jeff whom he hardly recognized because he was always on mask gave him a coded response.
  • “Good to see you. Some victims are stable except for their injuries, while some are still unconscious. I am waiting for the ambulances to move them to the Industrial Area.”
  • Mr. Morris’s security walked away without response to the collapsed building and took a critical look at it. After an hour, his men arrived with Mr. Ferguson and his Media Team. The ambulances were there also. Then, he got back to the helicopter and relayed the report he had gathered and concluded with:
  • “Everything is set, Mr. Morris.”
  • Now, Mr. Ferguson and his team began to set their equipment. They recorded the collapsed building from all the angles. Later, they proceeded to the clinic and captured the victims and interviewed those who could speak. While everyone’s attention was on the media team, the Chief Security Officer led Mr. Morris and Jeff to the collapsed building, and they inspected the quality of the work and ascertained the cause of the accident.
  • Afterwards, they returned to the helicopter and waited for the CSO, who was addressing his men. Then he faced his lieutenant, Mr. Ralf Young, and asked.
  • “How was your trip?”
  • “Our trip was fine, boss.”
  • “Is there any security issue on the way?”
  • “We did not envisage any, boss.”
  • “That is good. You will stay behind and monitor the movement around the Island. Watch out for possible protest from any quarter. Did you get it?”
  • “We got it, boss.”
  • Then, he got into the helicopter and Jeff flew off. At that instant, they heard a gunshot and the helicopter, which had hardly stabilized on the air, shattered into pieces and the occupants dropped on the ground. Now, the sound of the helicopter which was trying to take off and the sound of the gunshot confused the onlookers and even the security men. They only realized that there was danger when they saw the helicopter shatter into pieces and the occupants falling out simultaneously.
  • Now, Ralf and his men looked at the direction of the gun and noticed that there was a movement in the bush. Then, the person had laid flat on the floor to avoid attracting attention to himself, but it was too late.
