Chapter 7

  • Mahnoor's POV:
  • "Mahnoor, wake up. It's almost ten." Ami's voice woke me up.
  • 'Can't even sleep peacefully', getting up I grumbled and went to the bathroom. I brushed my teeth and combed my hairs but didn't bother to change my trousers and T-shirt.
  • "Assalam o Alaikum Ami." I greeted her and kissed her cheek.
  • "Wallaikum Assalam. Why didn't you go to college today?" She asked but it sounds more like a scolding.
  • "No reason." I shrugged and she didn't pry anymore. She knew my brain fails to function without food. Being a girl I eat a lot, I am not fond of starving myself just to look slim.
  • After breakfast, I helped Ami with cleaning and cooking and I surfed the TV. Usually, I pray Zohar (Afternoon prayer) after lunch but since I was at home, I thought it would be better to pray early. I went to my room and find my mobile was still being charged, on silent mode.
  • "Such an idiot." I mumbled. I had received a few texts from friends and eight miss calls from an unknown number.
  • Who would call me?
  • Not giving it a much thought I shrugged and offered my prayer and went down to eat lunch with my mother.
  • My phone ringed again, it was the same unknown number. I stare at my phone but I didn't answer the call or reject the call. Even though there was a possibility that this number could be Kanwal's, still my intuition was telling me not pick it up, so I didn't.
  • "Mahnoor answer the call." Ami frowned.
  • "Ami the caller is some lonely freak who keeps bothering me. Let it be." I lied to her.
  • "Then block the number." I said going into her room for a nap while I remained in the living room watching 'Lord of the Rings: The two towers' it's one of my favourite movies.
  • I watched the whole movie peacefully because my phone didn't ring again. It was two hours before Papa came home so, I lay down on the couch and closed my eyes but they instantly shot open when our landline phone ringed.
  • Groaning I got up and picked the phone.
  • "Hello, Assalam o Alaikum!" I said on bored tone, I really wanted to yell at the person.
  • "Wallaikum Assalam. Why didn't you come to college today, Noor?" The phone nearly dropped from my hand when I heard the caller's voice.
  • "W-who am I talking to?" I knew the answer very well, but it was hard to believe.
  • "Moosa." I clutched my shirt tightly.
  • "How did you get this number?" I heard a low chuckle from the other end.
  • "You are asking, how Moosa Khan got your number?" He sounded amused. It was a stupid question.
  • "Now, tell me why didn't you come?" His voice was low but demanding.
  • "I injured my foot." I lied.
  • "Interesting. It must have been hurting bad, right?"
  • Should've thought of a better lie...
  • "Yeah," I said biting my lip.
  • "I think I should send a doctor for a checkup."
  • "Ehhh. No! I have bandaged my foot already. It will be fine by tomorrow."
  • Is he serious???
  • "Very well then. I will tell Ahad to send Kanwal to her home so she could meet her family and you, sound okay to you?" He asked me in a very soft voice.
  • "Yes. I will appreciate that." I replied, confused about the sudden change in his voice.
  • "Good. I will be going out of city tomorrow. So take care of yourself." He said like we were friends from a very long time.
  • "Why are you telling me this?" I couldn't stop myself from asking.
  • "Just felt like telling you." He chuckled.
  • "Allah Hafiz Noor." With that, he hung up.
  • What was that?
  • I blinked several times to assess the situation, why is he interfering in my life like that?
  • I didn't know this guy before Kanwal's marriage. He was just a big bad villain of stories I heard from others and suddenly he showed up, acting like we know each other from years.
  • What was the purpose of his call?
  • Shrugging it off I focused on the matter at hand, my family will get worried if they ever come to know about this call and now I had a feeling that the person who was calling on my mobile was him.
  • ~*~
  • "My dearest, sweetest friend, you have got some serious explaining to do." Laiba said putting her hand on my shoulder and grinning like a madwoman.
  • As soon as class ended Laiba, Fatima, Bushra and Amna encircled me for interrogation. I should've expected this.
  • "What explanation?"
  • "What happened in the food court? Since when did you know Moosa Khan? Where did you go after that? Where were you on the next day and why did you skip yesterday?"
  • I think it's better to say the truth...
  • "Slow down, I'll tell you everything."
  • I started telling them everything from Kanwal's marriage to yesterday's event. But I left the part where Moosa offered to take me to Kanwal.
  • "Okay, let me get this straight." Amina said giving it all a thought and then she continued "You bump into him..." she paused for a second "Then he dropped you home and when you didn't come to college, he called you to ask the reason, plus he informed you that he is going out of the city. I don't know about you guys but it sounded like those cliché stories, where the big bad guy fall in love with the girl at first sight and tries to pursue her." Said Amna thoughtfully.
  • "Shut up." I snapped.
  • "I think you are right." Laiba agreed.
  • "You guys are exaggerating." I said
  • "Exaggerating or not Mano, but something is fishy, think about it. Have you ever heard about Moosa involved with a girl? And as far as I remember he is not married, neither engaged, it may sound stupid but I think it's better to stay alert." Fatima lectured.
  • "And if Amna is right, he will approach you again... soon." Said Laiba.
  • We sat there silently, looking at each other until our next class started. After our conversation, I couldn't concentrate on class anymore. Their words kept spinning in my mind, again and again. Till our last class, I was totally drained, all my friends tried to cheer me up but it was of no use. When we were about to leave for the home they comforted me and told me not to worry.
  • "Besides Mano, who knows when Moosa come back from his tour and until that time you would already be married to Kamil." They all give me a group hug before leaving.
  • To be honest, I felt a little better after hearing that and a bit happy, thinking about being Kamil as my life partner. But my happiness didn't stay long as I saw Moosa's black Prado near my college's gate.
  • No way!
