Chapter 13

  • Karen called into work asking for a few hours, but the sheriff gave her the day off. He told her considering that yesterday was a long day, and she was still new to the job. He told her to take a couple of days and be back on Friday. She and the reporter, Samantha Paxton, were heading to the woman whose brother was said to have committed suicide. Samantha had picked Karen up after Gregory had already left for work. Karen hadn't told him about what she was doing. He hadn't tried convincing her to quit her job and go after her original plan which was to be a welder and come work for his father. he had told her that when she was sworn in as deputy over two months ago. However, since he hadn't said anything but kept silent. She felt his frustration, but she convinced herself that this was her calling. Between Ethan's arrest and then last night with Troy. Yes, it was something that still lingered in her mind. Her great grandfather was a lawman. He had a reputation of catching his men. Of course, he didn't catch them all, but he made his mark. Samantha didn't talk much which was good thing as Karen had enough on her mind. The radio came on going over Ethan's proceedings, his lawyer was trying to claim insanity.
  • Samantha looking at the road, "You think he will get off for the insanity."
  • "He has all the things pointing that way. He isn't my problem anymore." Her thoughts however said otherwise. He came across her thoughts from time to time. She wondered if it was him thinking about getting back at her. Even though he was locked up; there were times, she wondered if he could escape. They were pulling up to a small house off the road. It needed a lot of work, but Karen wasn't going to judge. She knew what it was like to be poor. Hell, she had hit bottom when she moved up here and working two jobs. While she was struggling, she had managed going to school and sending her family money, till they got back on their feet. She looked around as she looked over at a car that was parked and had several dents. Karen had the urge to go over to the car, had to be a 1960's car. It had seen better days. She touched the handle and saw a man screaming in pain. She heard dogs barking but she wasn't in the present but somewhere else. She saw money in the passenger seat along with a girl who was crying as guns were pointing at them. She heard a voice saying that he wasn't going to screw over Danny anymore. She saw through the eyes of a man who watched his girlfriend being shot point blank in front of the car. Then there was a black out. She turned over and saw the young man looking at her, "I was murdered. Danny dumped my girlfriend's body in the well. I was taking drugs and making my own sells. Danny caught on and set me up. They were selling meth and other drugs from another town."
