Chapter 2 An Eye for an Eye, Traitor’s Requiem

  • Chapter 2 An Eye for an Eye, Traitor’s Requiem
  • Ethan sneered. “Looks like you wheedled a lot out of Nancy. Did you start to believe your own lies?”
  • “I didn’t lie! Nancy’s the liar here! She didn’t save you! She didn’t!” Lauren looked up in defiance. “I saved you, Ethan!”
  • “Incorrigible!” Before she could finish, Ethan roared angrily, “Death is what you deserve, you wicked witch!”
  • Lauren looked up at the man whom she had loved and protected with her life for a decade, then she sneered. Before she could realize what was going on, she felt a searing pain coming from her head. Ethan was dragging her to the operating room by her hair, then with a kick, he forced her to kneel. The kick almost crushed her knees, but she refused to even flinch.
  • Ethan stood before her, deadly and mad. “I will make you pay hundredfolds for what you did to my mother and Nancy, Lauren!”
  • As she knelt on the ground, a devastating cold possessed her, freezing her very soul.
  • “And I will make your life a living hell!” Ethan asked someone to send a divorce agreement here. Then he tossed it at Lauren, wanting her to sign it.
  • “You want to get a divorce?” Lauren was ashen. She might be the only woman in this world who was divorced the day she got married.
  • “Sign it,” said Ethan coldly.
  • Lauren looked up at him. “Have you ever loved me over these ten years?” She refused to believe this.
  • “Never.” Ethan jeered at her.
  • It was a simple reply, but one that hurt Lauren more than any weapon could. I loved and protected him for ten years, but what do I get? Nothing. With trembling hands, she signed the papers, then she cackled. It sounded jarring in the silent room, but it spoke of her pride that was crushed. “I’ve loved you for ten years, Ethan. Now I see it has been nothing but a joke. You and I are over now.”
  • Ethan only sneered at her, then he made a call. Not long after that, the police came in. “Which one of you is Lauren Collins?”
  • Lauren looked up as the police came to cuff her up. Behind them were reporters who took countless photos of her. With a commotion of this magnitude, everyone in the hospital was made aware of it.
  • “I heard Miss Collins killed her mother-in-law and Mr. Parker’s lover.”
  • “That’s no rumor, man. Mrs. Parker’s body is in the operating room.”
  • “She’s one wicked witch.”
  • The slanders and curses were deafening, but Lauren ignored them. She looked up at Ethan. “Do you hate me this much?” she asked calmly.
  • “Blood for blood.” Ethan smiled.
  • “I did not murder—” Lauren roared, struggling to escape the police’s grip, but to no avail.
  • Ethan looked at her. “You’ll never atone for your sins enough, Collins.”
  • Lauren bellowed up to the heavens, “I have no blood on my hands! Why should I carry the sin I did not commit? That b*stard Nancy’s the murderer! She should be carrying the sin, not me!”
  • Ethan gave her a tight slap. “Go to hell, Collins!” he roared.
  • “I’m going to drag her down with me even if it’s the last thing I do!” Lauren cackled. “You’d better pray you never find out about the truth, Ethan! Because if you do, you’ll regret what you did to me today! You betrayed me!”
  • After pinning her down, the police nodded at Ethan before taking her away. Countless cameras flashed, capturing the mess that was Lauren Collins. Ethan wanted to say something, but the sight of the bloodied Lauren made him swallow his words.
  • She had a beautiful smile on her face, albeit haunting. “The only thing I regret is falling in love with you, Ethan. If there’s a next life, I don’t want to see you ever again.”
  • Ten years a dream, but reality eventually woke her up. Lauren realized her love had always been unrequited. Ethan never did trust her, so he didn’t even care about the matter’s veracity. Her sacrifices and her feelings never reached him, but she thought they did. Alas. This debt you owe me can never be repaid, Ethan. Her final smile blossomed like the summer fireworks, fleeting, but gorgeous. It was the final proof of her glorious existence before she was spirited away by the underworld’s amaryllis.
  • The crowd soon went on with their own business, leaving nothing but the breeze whispering into the sky. Ethan stood before the windowsill, watching Lauren being taken away in the police car, his gaze gloomy. He didn’t know how to feel about this. Ethan knew Lauren deserved this, for this was retribution. However, what Lauren said left him with a feeling that he’d lost something for good.
