Chapter 13 A Faraway Death

  • Ethan flew into a rage. “Say that one more time if you dare, Lauren!” he roared. She was telling the truth, even if it did hurt, but still, he was furious about it.
  • Lauren smiled at him, but her gaze was still as dead as ever. “Mr. Parker, look at you. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought you loved this Lauren you talked about.”
  • Ethan finally snapped. He went up and gripped her neck once more. “You wanna die, Lauren?” He sneered cruelly.
  • Ethan lost his composure and fell for her little trap. It was a small victory for Lauren, for she was still smiling, though it was getting hard for her to breathe. “Death?” She looked at him hatefully. “Death’s easy, but living? That’s hard.”
  • Ethan was shaken up by how different she acted now.
  • As time passed, perhaps he was gripping her too hard, for Lauren became paler and paler, but her smile remained. “Do you hate me so much, Mr. Parker? I’ll have to move somewhere else, then. Don’t worry, Mr. Parker. I’ll never show up before you even if that’s the last thing I do. Don’t want to sully your eyes now.”
  • Ethan was incredulous, and he roared, “LAUREN!”
  • Lauren smiled calmly and tried to pry his hand away, but she couldn’t muster up any strength. No matter how much she tried, it was impossible to break free. In the end, it was Simon who got Ethan to let her go. She landed on the wrong foot and staggered back, spraining her injured leg. A stab of pain shot up her head, but she didn’t wince. “Lauren’s dead five years ago, Ethan. She’s dead after you tortured her.”
  • Those words had him recalling her final words for him before she went into prison. “I shouldn’t have fallen for you, Ethan! I never want to see you again!”
  • His heart skipped a beat, but he calmed down. “Who’s the child’s father? Don’t test my patience,” he restated his query.
  • Her expression lifeless, Lauren answered, “Dunno, but I know I’m the mother.”
  • Ethan sneered at her and straightened himself up. “I’ll look into this myself. If you lie to me, I’ll chuck you into prison for five more years.” Then he looked at Simon. “Let’s go, Simon.”
  • After they left, Lauren closed the door with trembling hands. She then slowly slid down and buried her head between her legs as she sobbed silently.
  • She could see a beautiful person smiling brightly like the sun before her, but a moment later, a bloodied Alexander lay lifelessly in her hands, his warmth slowly vanishing. “Al, Al!” she mumbled in agony. “Al!” As her voice broke, she started having a splitting headache.
