Chapter 5

  • I don't say 'I love you' a lot. To my friends, to my cousins, honestly? To anyone. You know why? Because I don't plan to overuse it on someone who would probably leave my life anyway. But you know what? I LOVE you.
  • You've been in my life ever since first grade, and you stuck with me till senior year. Even though there are times I can be shit ass complicated, you were there for me in times when my friends will tell me to piss off. And if ever you or I would give up on one another, remember you will always have a part of me with you and vice versa.
  • Because the memories we had would truly take a lifetime to replace.

  • May 31, 2008. Eleven-Years-Old.
  • "This is your fault!" Kylie screamed, as she wandered across the bushes and trees, hands not even touching a single branch. Eyes scanning the surroundings, the nine-year-old dropped on the log and scowled.
  • Sam copied her actions, "My fault? You wanted to explore!"
  • "No," she said. "You wanted to explore! I wanted to play tag!" She went on to stand up but he pulled her right back down with him, eyes narrowed disapprovingly.
  • "Mommy said if you're lost you have to stay where you are."
  • "But I don't want to stay where I am!" Kylie's bottom lip trembled and her vision started to blur. She never cried in front of anyone, not when the bullies pulled her pigtails, not when her parents argue...Kylie never had cried in front of anyone, as her father had said, she shouldn't. It was bad and embarrassing. But she found her head falling on Sam's shoulder with tears too much to bear. "I want to go home, Sammy. I want to go home."
  • The old trunks of trees seemed to be leaning over them like the evil looking ones in Snow White. The cute little animals, however, weren't there. They were only exchanged with large mosquitoes, sucking their blood every chance they get. I shouldn't have gone on this camping trip. I shouldn't have played tag. I shouldn't have left Sam's brother by himself. Who's going to find us?
  • What if there's a snake?
  • What if we get killed?
  • What if a bear eats us?
  • Kylie shivered and shook, a hand falling limp as her fingers trailed around the soil. The wind was getting stronger and she inched a closer to Sam, biting her nails every time she heard a scuttle in the bushes and a rustle in the trees. The clouds darkened and thunder sounded.
  • She always had the answer to everything...she was always last to panic. But now, even staying calm seemed fruitless. Kylie's hands clenched into fists, and she struggled to stay calm, hoping that the nuisance thoughts would find themselves scurrying out of her head. She hated not knowing anything.
  • But it didn't.
  • It felt like hours-hours of sitting as the skies rumbled and flashed as an upcoming rain made its presence known. Soon, a flock of birds came flying through, flapping their wings as fast as they could.
  • "I'm scared, Sammy." Kylie buried her head in Sam's shoulder, heart beating erratically in her chest. The rubber band around her hair broke and soon a large frizz of her blonde hair fell down to her shoulders, a few strands, blocking their faces. A hand reached out to grip his lanky upper arm, nails digging into his skin, but he didn't seem to care. Sam just sat there and stared at the sky. "I don't want to die."
  • "We won't die," Sam insisted. "Mommy will find us."
  • "What if she doesn't?"
  • "She will. I know she will."
  • Swollen eyes looked up at him, and Kylie took one deep breath.
  • We can do this.
  • Soon, rain started to fall.
  • Droplets of water hit Kylie's leg, then her shoulders, then her hair, the sticky sensation trailing down her skin. She pulled her lose jacket closer to her body, hoping to find warmth. "She'll find us?" Kylie asked, head craning to look up at him.
  • There was fear in his eyes. It was evident, but he didn't let it eat him up. "I'm sure."
  • "You'll protect me right?" Her voice was feeble and weak like a cat's. "You won't leave?"
  • This time, Sam smiled confidently. "I wouldn't leave. I promise."
  • His mother found them later. She wrapped a blanket around them and rushed the two into the old caravan, and they shivered like madmen. Sam never let go of Kylie and she never let go of him.
  • He kept his promise.
  • But how long would he be able to keep it till it flutters away like all the rest?
  • Kylie didn't know the answer to that too.
  • May 13, 2013. Sixteen-Years-Old.
  • One little picture of Jason's puffy bloodshot eye, and Kylie had-had enough of all the drama Sam was trying to bring.
  • The other month, Sam had complimented Jason for being a great guy, though he was still pretty somber about her refusing to go the movies with him. The other week, he had decided to profess his love to her all over again. Just yesterday, Sam decided to ignore the heck out of her and decided to become more of a drama queen.
  • Now, Sam Kallis was just the epitome of bullshit.
  • Kylie stomped up to his front door, letting the driver wait in the car before ringing the doorbell. Out came Sam with a bag on his back, probably also on his way to school. There were dark circles at the bottom of his eye and his lips were cracked and dry. His eyes widened in surprise before it went back to its emotionless stupor. "I don't want to see you," he snapped, about to close the door but her foot interrupted him, pushing the door open once again. "I've had enough of your drama."
  • Drama?
  • I'm the drama queen now?
  • Kylie raised an eyebrow and gave him a sickly sweet smile. "Good. Because I've had enough of all the little shit you tried to pull," she snapped back, hand on the door making sure he wouldn't be able to shut it. "Now tell me, why does Jason have a black eye?"
  • He stared at her defiantly, "That's between me and your boyfriend."
  • "My friend," Kylie corrected almost reluctantly. "A friend that you hit. Why?"
  • "He was head locked with another girl. He doesn't damn deserve you!" And that was when Kylie got a good look at his eyes. They were fierce and filled with honesty that even she had to step back. She gritted her teeth and clenched her fists.
  • "Well? The blonde girl you probably saw was his partner in the science project! Or maybe not! Oh, who cares, Sam! We aren't together," Kylie glared at him, blood rushing up to her face. "You never hated him-never, so why the fuck do you have to start caring about his life now? Just admit it-you don't like him with me."
  • God.
  • It was a good thing his neighbors were miles away or else the scene would've been horrifying, and that Carlos was still in rehab or else this would've ended differently. Sam, however, didn't even entertain those thoughts before he his hand slammed against the wall. "Yeah? What if I do? He doesn't deserve you, Ky! Just give it a rest, and stop trying too hard."
  • "You're not my father to decide who's good enough for me and who isn't! You're not my boyfriend to decide who I'll see and who I won't. And if you want to continue being my best friend, you might as well just shut the fuck up and let me get on with my own life because this doesn't even involve you."
  • Sam scowled, "Yeah? Well you've deluded yourself if you think life seems to revolve around you."
  • And he slammed the door shut.

  • He was kissing another girl.
  • They weren't together anyway, so why do I have to care?
  • I don't.
  • "Stupid Sam," Kylie grumbled, slamming her books back into the locker. Some students looked up, but she didn't care. Sam hadn't made his way to her locker like he used to or sent jokes into her cell just to cheer her up.
  • Somehow, she was relieved.
  • Without Sam, it felt as if she was missing something, but it was also as if she was free to be whoever she wanted to be. No one would judge her, ...Only Sam bothered to critique her, and without Sam, she could be absolutely anybody.
  • Life couldn't have been more bothersome.
  • "Hey."
  • A familiar voice made Kylie turned around and a soft smile threaded across her lips. "Hey, Jason." She leaned on the locker, head tilted to the side. "Do you need anything?"
  • The blond guy chuckled, a hand racking up his sleeves, showing more of his muscled arms. She glanced back to his face, a blush evident on her cheeks. "I just want to thank you," he smiled and winced, his left eye swelled and dark. "Heard you stood up for me."
  • "You're a friend. Of course I will."
  • "Sam's your best friend."
  • "He's wrong," Kylie shrugged and his smile widened even more.
  • Jason leaned in a bit yet still remained in a moderate distance in case any coordinator would catch them in this position. "Say, what do you think in making this official?" He asked, eyes twinkling. "You and me?"
  • He was kissing another girl.
  • He doesn't deserve you, Ky!
  • Kylie didn't know what got into her, or in Jenny's point of view, what had possessed her to do such blasphemy, but she stepped back and gave him a bland smile. "I'm sorry, but no."
  • And she walked away, chin up and a smile evident in her lips.

  • Later that day, Sam walked towards her with a chocolate bar in his hands and a somber look on his face. He looked like a puppy getting ready for a scolding. "I'm sorry," he said, hands rubbing the back of his neck. "I didn't mean for the words to come out that way."
  • "You got me a chocolate bar," Kylie said blatantly, looking up from the books she was looking into. "I'm not allowed to eat that in the library."
  • "I was hoping that it would make you not mad at me anymore?" Sam tried to give a small smile but it only turned into a grimace.
  • "It didn't work."
  • He sighed, placing the chocolate bar on the table. "Look, I'm really sorry. And if there was a way that I could turn back the time and kill myself to prevent me from saying those words, I would." he glanced at her work. "I'll be going now, wouldn't want to disturb you."
  • Sam walked away.
  • Kylie grabbed the chocolate bar a few minutes later.
