Chapter 4

  • Two days had passed since the incident of the shoot out. Honestly, she was in full shock when she discovered what had happened and how two of her friends met their end.
  • According to the police, an intruder suddenly barged into her home and ransacked the place, demanding Miranda an explanation for their failed relationship. The man brought a gun and immediately pointed it at the couple while feuding. He had confessed all of the things they have done behind Alfred's back which is possibly the person Emmie caught Miranda cheating with. When they weren't able to make up for the argument, it all turned into a gruesome scene where the intruder fired his weapon, killing both Miranda and Alfred.
  • Her hands were still trembling, thinking of the matter. She can't believe that in a blink of an eye, two of her friends suddenly disappeared from her sight and never again will she see them.
  • The unfortunate event where they were immediately brought to the hospital yet came dead on arrival left a big mark on her heart. It may be true that Miranda might have been wrong for cheating with her boyfriend Alfred but still, they didn't deserve to die yet. Especially since, Miranda and Alfred acted as though they were now a part of her family; her unrelated siblings.
  • Tears rolled down her eyes while staring at their graves. The man who had killed the two were now caught and imprisoned while she and Oddette were grieving for their loss.
  • Just as she was lost in her own thoughts, she suddenly felt a warm hand across her shoulders. "Emmie, let's go," the woman said. When she turned around to look at the person, it was none other than Mrs. Crawford. She stared at her for a few seconds before they finally walked away from the cemetery.
  • "We'll be going to your house tomorrow. We'll have everything cleaned while Miranda and Alfred's family will take the couple's belongings."
  • Emmie and Oddette were silent the whole time. They didn't have much to say as they still felt sad and somehow stunned with what happened in just a span of a few days.
  • She stroked her stomach once again. It looks like her little one won't be meeting Miranda and Alfred any time soon.
  • On the other hand, the reason why her best friend is with them is because Mrs. Crawford suggested that she have a companion with her. She shouldn't be roaming around alone, especially at such a sensitive time of her year. To someone like her who is pregnant and vulnerable to her mental state, she needed someone to talk to, someone she could trust and will never feel scared about.
  • Since there was a possibility that Oddette's parents may reject her request, Mrs. Crawford was the one to inform them. She said that she'll be taking care of the two young children which in turn made the old couple a lot relieved.
  • Her hands balled into a fist as she stayed quiet with roaming thoughts.
  • Emmie just couldn't imagine that there are people who are willing to kill just because of rejection. Is it because they are afraid that no one will love them anymore? Is it because they became so drunk of that love that it turned into an obsession?
  • She shut her eyes for a second.
  • If you compare her situation with the criminal, she has the opposite event at all. She loved three men with all her heart and yet each of them gave her heart back broken into pieces. She had no choice but to keep rebuilding it until she shattered into many pieces and was left with nothing but a life growing inside of her.
  • They only took advantage of her naivety; her femininity and her kindness. To her, it was as though they only played with her feelings and then dumped her right after as though she was a trash not needed anymore.
  • Once she opened her eyes again, she had her line of sight towards the person driving the car and then to her best friend sitting in front of her.
  • It's a good thing that she still has these two people by her side or else… she might have already given up, a long time ago.
  • She bit her lip.
  • Although, she had betrayed her best friend once when she and her brother had a secret affair which resulted in her shattered heart. It really is a good thing that Oddie is not the father of her child or else… she might have lost her best friend.
  • Meanwhile, the only people who knew of the child's father in her womb was none other than the deceased couple. Even Oddette who she regards as her best friend doesn't have any clue. This is probably because of the embarrassment she feels and guilt building up within her.
  • She's well aware that her friend is already upset enough but she just couldn't take the courage to tell her the truth.
  • Emmie even knows that her best friend is just trying her best not to interrogate her and be patient until when she'll open up which makes her relieved and happy.
  • She appreciates all her efforts.
  • Once the car finally stopped in front of Crawford's residence, the three of them immediately headed outside of the vehicle and went straight to the house to rest.
  • Emmie and Oddette went straight to their occupied bed rooms while Mrs. Crawford stayed in the living room.
  • "I miss them," Emmie suddenly mumbled when she was now changing her clothes. The loneliness discerned into her voice could be felt through your heart as her eyes were filled with flowing tears.
  • To her, those two people were really like her extended family. They act as her older siblings which made her in such a dire emotional state.
  • People may judge her for being clingy but what can she do? She feels attached easily, especially when the person has always taken care of her.
  • After her parents' death, meeting Miranda and Alfred was something she never expected. At first, she allowed the woman to stay with her as her housemate until it turned to her living in the same home and later on with Alfred staying in as well.
  • She felt her stomach grumbling for a second.
  • If it weren't for her homeroom teacher offering her to stay in her house, she might have still felt lonely and scared the whole time she found out she was pregnant.
  • What does she know about raising a child anyway? What does she know about being pregnant and living alone with no man to help her?
  • Mrs. Crawford acted as though she was her long lost adoptive mother. She always asks her how she's doing, what she wants to eat, accompanies her for her prenatal check up and even suggests things she thinks she'll need.
  • She was a wise woman who has provided her a mother figure to follow.
  • "I also miss them despite it happening just a few days ago," Oddette replied. "I also told Oddie what happened to them," she added, which made her stop for a second. Hearing his name sounds so familiar yet unfamiliar anymore.
  • Her heart felt a stung as her friend continued to talk.
  • "You know, my brother had been pestering me about what happened and how it occurred, it's almost making me insane!" she added while she did not say a word.
