Chapter 3 His Fear Threatened

  • He was employed by his father "As a regional manager in his company, he oversees all of the company's projects in the western region of the country, and he has never been found wanting in any way.
  • His father, the CEO of Dowels oil and gas company, was about to retire, and Kunle was the next in line to take over as has been the tradition for the past three generations; his great grandfather founded the company and passed it down to his son, Kunle's grandfather, who in turn passed it down to his son, Kunle's father, as an inheritance.
  • At this point, it was Kunle "s turn to take control of the company, and his father wants to scare him by threatening him with the thing he is most afraid of: marriage. There's no way in the world he was going to get married at least not yet. He wasn't willing to sell himself into slavery because that is what he sees marriage as.
  • You give up your right to do the things you enjoy, such as clubbing and late-night outs, simply because you want to marry, It was obvious he wasn't prepared for any of that. His parents would have to come up with another plan because he is not participating in this one.
  • He made the decision to call his father to confirm what his mother had said.
  • "Hello, Daddy, and good morning, sir."
  • "Good morning, Kunle, how are you?" His father's grumpy voice answered him and from his tone, Kunle knew his father was still in bed, but he wasn't sorry. If they were going to ruin his weekend by intruding, he might as well ruin theirs as well.
  • "Dad I'm not feeling well; my mother just left and said t.."
  • "I know what she told you Kunle, you need to get your life together because you are not getting any younger, you are thirty for crying out loud, your mother and I already had you at your age, you should start thinking about getting married and settling down."
  • "But I can't marry like that dad; I need to meet someone and fall in love with her first before thinking about marrying her."
  • "So you're trying to say that out of all the girls you go out with, you don't love any of them?" Mr. Idowu asked
  • "Well, here's the thing.."
  • "Kunle, you should be ashamed of yourself." he continued.
  • "Why? Because I don't love or care for any of the women I hang out with?" Kmle asked.
  • "Yes, and stop dismissing it as a mere hang out because it isn't; we both know it's more than that."
  • "Dad, three months is too short to get married; I need more time."
  • "And that's why you have three months, so get to work because the clock is ticking, now excuse me, I need to go back to sleep." He said
  • Kunle couldn't believe what was happening to him, so he decided to call his guys and see if they could come up with a solution.
  • "Hey guy, what's up?" said Joshua, who was most likely still in bed. Who wouldn't want to? Not after the way they partied the night before. If it weren't for the fact that Kunle's mother hadn't come to ruin his morning with an uninvited visit, he'd still be in bed with his chick.
  • "I'm not fine, man." Kunle responded.
  • "What happened? You give the woman belle (pidgin for pregnant)?"
  • "Guy, my situation right now is more hat that oo, can we meet up later this evening at our usual spot? I have something to say to you my guys."
  • "You sound very serious."
  • "I'm dead serious, man, and I'll notify Yemi and Nicholas. Is 4 p.m. fine with you?" he asked.
  • "Yeah, 4 p.m. is fine." Joshua responded.
  • "All right, man, see you later."
  • Kunle was already seated in their lounge by 4 p.m., waiting for his friends; they have all been best friends for over seven years; they met in university and have been together ever since. Always keeping an eye on each other's backs.
  • Yemi was the first to show up. "How are you doing, man? You don't look too good; what did you want to tell us?"
  • "I'm fine, bro, just take a seat, and I'll tell you when everyone arrives." Kunle poured some whiskey into Yemi's glass from the bottle he was drinking from.
  • Joshua and Nicholas arrived a few minutes later.
  • "Sorry guys, traffic was crazy," Nicholas said as he sat down and poured himself a drink.
  • "Well, mine wasn't traffic, I just got a little distracted," Harry, who was also pouring himself a drink, explained.
  • "Do you mean by a woman?" Ayo inquired.
  • "Before nko, na man i go dey follow?" Joshua fired back attempting to defend himself.
  • "I'm getting married, guys." Kunle finally spoke
  • "What?" They all exclaimed together with shock.
  • "Kunle, what did you just say?" Joshua asked, suddenly losing interest in his drink. They were all waiting for him to repeat himself, including Yemi and Nicholas.
  • "I said, my parents have asked me to marry, and my mother came over to tell me this morning" Kunle said
  • "Guy, what kind of joke is that, na?" "How will your parents ask you to marry like that?" Joshua clearly did not believe what Kunle was saying.
  • "I still don't understand why your parents would ask you to marry out of the blue?" Yemi inquired.
  • "Well, apparently they want me to marry or forfeit my inheritance, which I still don't understand."
  • ""So you're saying that if you don't marry, you won't get your inheritance?" Nicholas inquired.
  • "yes, and I only have three months to do it, can you believe it?" Kunle said.
  • "Are you certain about this?" "I hope this isn't some kind of prank?" Yemi inquired.
