Chapter 18
- Blake Moreno.
- The stakeout had been a bust. Not a single soul was in sight, and it had been so eerily quiet, that I had doubts as to the genuineness of the said locations. I believe we'll get her. It was just a matter of time. April and the others decided to let me off the case. If no one showed up for the transaction, It could only mean one thing. She knew I had found out about them, but how?. The trackers also led to a dead-end, like they were found and shipped to a different location to throw us off her trail. If she knew about those, then It was not safe to stay within her sight. She didn't have a reason to suspect me yet, but she's smart. I'm sure she'll figure it out. I wonder what happened between her and Noah last night. The trackers had led to different destinations, which led to dead ends. We had other men stationed around the first stop she made because there was evidence of a shootout. It was absurd, but I had been scared that she might have been hurt. Was that why she didn't come to work?. She was never late to arrive. She was the first to get here, no matter the circumstance, so it was a little off-putting that she wasn't. I packed up my stuff into a box, bracing myself as I heard the buzz of the elevator. The others were aware that I'll be quitting. Elena advised against it. She went on about how Gabrielle loved to be in control of those kinds of decisions. She made me aware that Gabrielle won't be pleased about my decision, and that it might lead to some disastrous outcomes. It was expected, but I was sure she'd have no choice but to let me go.
- I should hate her... Even without evidence, I was almost sure of her status in the mafia world. Her innocent look was the only thing that nudged people off her track. You could never suspect her because she was a role model in and out. In the months I've worked for her, she made me earn every penny, made me strive to be the best that I could, pushed me past my limit until I felt like snapping. She was strong, and not just physically, she had both brains and brawns. I came to respect her, came to want her, but now it had to end. I can never be with a criminal, no matter how awe-inspiring she is. I'll do my job, because I've sworn an oath to protect the defenseless, to rid the society of tyrants. No amount of feelings will get in my way.
