Chapter 3 Making a Bet

  • At the drop of the voice, a tall, slender figure walked over, and it was none other than Su Qi.
  • “Who the hell are you to say that?!” With a wrathful look, the man’s fury was apparent to all.
  • Liu Nian hurriedly pulled Su Qi aside as she reprimanded, “Su Qi, stop it with your nonsense! What do you know about medicine? Stop creating trouble for me. Hurry up and go home now!”
  • Following that, she apologized to the man, “My apologies. He’s mentally unstable and spouting nonsense. He is not medically trained at all. This is a professional hospital, and we will come up with a solution to treat your son for sure. Please stay calm and be patient.”
  • “Be patient?! My child ended up in this state because of your hospital and you are telling me to be patient?!” the man continued lividly, “My kid came here with a common skin disease. It is you who caused him to suffer in pain! This is unacceptable. Just you wait, I’m going to shut your hospital down! If anything happens to my son, all you charlatans are going to pay with your lives.”
  • The situation was so intense that everyone at the scene dared not utter a single word.
  • Su Qi furrowed his brows as he observed the little boy carefully. He could sense a faint greenish smog swirling above his head. It looked like his sufferings were not medically induced but rather, he was possessed by evil!
  • No wonder all medical treatments were to no avail. The kid’s condition was critical and needed immediate attention, otherwise his life would be at risk.
  • Su Qi was a medical prodigy and one of the acclaimed doctors within the Su clan. During his 5 years with the Liu family, he had spent most of his time expanding his medical knowledge and refining his skills. Hence, it was safe to say that he could cure diseases which no one could.
  • Su Qi had been laying low all this time but for the sake Liu Nian, he had no choice but to come forward and get her out from a difficult situation. Besides, this would be a good time for him to prove his worth to his wife.
  • He asked the man firmly, “Has the child been saying strange things in his sleep recently?”
  • “How did you know?” the middle-aged man was taken aback as he had not disclosed this piece of information to the doctors before. How did this youth find out?
  • Ignoring his question, Su Qi smiled gently and probed further, “I believe he couldn’t stand being under the sunlight and prefers to stay indoors instead, am I right?”
  • The man’s brows were pulled into a frown as he asked cautiously, “Are you a doctor at this hospital?”
  • Judging by the man’s reaction, everyone else could surmise Su Qi had hit the nail on the head. They couldn’t help but feel impressed by Su Qi at this point as they shared a same thought on their mind, Was the fellow perhaps medically trained in reality?
  • Liu Nian, on the other hand, was annoyed by Su Qi’s know-all air. She knew very well that he was most definitely not a doctor; he was nothing but a mere lazy bum. Since marrying into the Liu’s 5 years ago, he never held down a regular job and lived off her entirely. How could anyone be as shameless as this?
  • If this was any other occasion, she would just ignore him and let it slide. But given the situation, stirring trouble was simply too much!
  • “Su Qi, enough is enough!” Liu Nian trembled in fury as she yelled at him, “Haven’t you got me into enough trouble? What have you provided for me or our family except for twiddling your thumbs at home all day?! I was the one who provided for the family and you, a good-for-nothing! Yet, here you are trying to jeopardize my career! What the hell is wrong with you?!”
  • The crowd immediately shifted their attention to the couple as they showed contempt to Su Qi.
  • Su Qi was dumbstruck by Liu Nian’s harsh criticism as his body stiffened from intense anger, So this is her impression of me…
  • At this moment, Su Qi felt a twinge in his heart. This was the first time in 5 years since they got married that Liu Nian had said such harsh words to him.
  • The doctors who had a crush on Liu Nian were pleased with the drama, especially Xue Hanhai, who beamed so brightly as he chimed in, “Su Qi, not only are you a good-for-nothing, you are a troublemaker! After all that Liu Nian has done for you, is this how you repay her?!”
  • The others followed suit and mocked him.
  • The middle-aged man was equally bewildered. Is the stunning Dr. Liu married to a deadbeat?
  • “Liu Nian, so this is how you perceive me…” with a deep voice, Su Qi gazed at Liu Nian intently.
  • Liu Nian felt guilty for a minute after hearing Su Qi’s words but she quickly dismissed it for she found Su Qi to be a true good-for-nothing. In fact, she would have divorced him a long time ago if it weren’t for her soft-heartedness.
  • Seeing as her unswerving opinion towards him was apparent in her reaction, Su Qi let out a sigh. Looks like it is imperative for me to prove my worth today.
  • “Why are you still standing here? Haven’t you embarrassed us enough? Go on and get lost now!” Xue Hanhai attempted to twist the knife in his wound.
  • Unexpectedly, Su Qi glared at him as he taunted, “Your medical skills are as lousy as your character.”
  • Xue Hanhai was taken aback by his comeback, “What did you say? I dare you to repeat yourself!”
  • “I wonder how an incompetent person like you could be the chief of this hospital? The boy isn’t suffering from chickenpox, but a degenerative viral infection. Also, his body condition is not fit for the drug that you’ve administered. It will only serve to aggravate the patient’s condition.”
  • “Screw you! Who are you to comment on my treatment procedures? You’re just a jobless man living off your wife. For your information, the drug is mild in nature and would not cause any allergy reactions,” Xue Hanhai retorted jarringly.
  • Su Qi could not be bothered with Xue Hanhai as he gave him a tight slap on the face to shut his mouth. He was determined to cure the little boy today by hook or by crook. Apart from fulfilling his duty as a medical practitioner, he wanted to prove to Liu Nian that he was not a loser. But more importantly, a life was at stake here as his inaction would cause the little boy to lose his life within 3 days.
  • “Trust me. I’ve absolute confidence to cure your son,” Su Qi said firmly to the man with resoluteness in his eyes.
  • After some consideration, the man decided to put his faith in Su Qi, “Okay. I’ll believe you this once. But let me be clear, if you fail to cure him, don’t blame me for the consequences.”
  • Without waiting for Su Qi to respond, Xue Hanhai immediately called attention to the fact that he wasn’t a doctor, “He is just a jobless man! If you decide to go with his treatment, the hospital cannot be held liable for any accidents. Please think this through!”
  • On hearing this, the middle-aged man’s expression altered as he glared at Su Qi, “Aren’t you a doctor?”
  • “No, I’m not.”
  • “Fuck! How dare you mess with me?!”
  • Su Qi took one step closer and said calmly, “I believe the fact that I am not a doctor does not affect my capability to treat your son.”
  • The man hesitated for a bit however he was somehow moved by Su Qi’s confidence, “Can you honestly cure my son?”
  • “I can,” Su Qi nodded his head firmly.
  • “No!” Xue Hanhai interjected, “Do not get fooled by his mumbo-jumbo! He is taking a revenge on the hospital and all of us here by deliberately creating trouble for us. It’s true that the hospital will not be held accountable for his actions. But at the end of the day, I’m pretty sure when things go wrong, it will impact the hospital in one way or the other.”
  • The others agreed to Xue Hanhai as they all nodded their heads.
  • Liu Nian had nothing but disgust for Su Qi at this point, “Su Qi, just leave. Please. I beg of you. I’m so disappointed in you. I don’t blame you for your incompetence, but here you are, making a spectacle of yourself. Are you that eager to ruin my career?”
  • Their words only intensified his desire to cure the child as Su Qi took a deep breath and turned to address the crowd, “Don’t worry. I’m acting on my own accord and it has nothing to do with Huahai Hospital.”
  • “Well you would better walk the walk and take full responsibility if there are any mishaps. Further to that, you will have to leave Liu Nian for good!” Xue Hanhai’s words were forcing Su Qi into a dead-end.
  • The latter replied nonchalantly, “Sure! If I can’t cure the patient, I’ll take full responsibility. I’ll also leave Liu Nian and never set foot in Huahai. But what will happen to you if I can successfully treat the patient?”
  • Liu Nian was in a daze as she thought, Is this the Su Qi that I know? He seems like a different man today.
  • At this time, Xue Hanhai sneered as he vowed, “Oh? You seem really confident in your case. Very well. If you succeed in treating the patient, I’ll kneel and greet you as my grandfather a hundred times and quit my job at the hospital!”
