Chapter 5 Frightening Black Cat

  • My shout attracted the attention of the middle-aged man and woman, so I hurriedly turned my back to them and whispered to Cassius, "Are you kidding me?"
  • "Do I look like I am?" Cassius stared at me with a cold face and a pair of dark orbs. "Do you want me to possess you and help you?"
  • He was tough, and it was obvious that the question came out of his mouth like a threat.
  • I shook my head in denial. Ordinary people couldn't see Cassius, which made it convenient for him to possess me at any time, but even after that, wouldn't I still be the one who would keep vigil at night?
  • "Erm." I knew I had to obey him without a choice, so I sighed in resignation and asked, "Can you tell me the reason why I'm doing this, though? Why should I keep vigil for him when I'm not related to him at all?"
  • "He died suddenly in the store with resentment in his heart and was frightened by a black cat. Then, you appeared. He inhaled the vitality of a living person and was stained with your blood. Tonight is the seventh day since his death, and it is when his negativity is strongest. If we let him be, he will turn into a zombie."
  • I suddenly remembered that when I went to the store yesterday, the old man was lying on the workshop bed. I thought he was asleep, so I went over to wake him up.
  • That should be the time when he inhaled my vitality and woke up.
  • The more I thought about it, the more frightened I became, so I asked in a shudder, "Will he kill me if he turns into a zombie?"
  • "What do you think?" Cassius stared at me with a half-hearted smile. "You made him turn into a zombie and unable to rest peacefully six feet under. Of course, he will kill you first."
  • Cassius looked like he was enjoying the show as if he wouldn't care about me even if I was killed. There was only one way to survive now...
  • "I… I'll keep vigil."
  • Walking to the funeral hall, I looked at the middle-aged man and tears fell before I could speak.
  • He was surprised as he asked, "Do you know my dad, young lady?"
  • "What kind of question is that? If she doesn't know him, will she cry so sadly?" The middle-aged woman gave him an eye roll.
  • Hearing that, I sobbed even louder. I wasn't sad. I was terrified!
  • While crying, I didn't forget my task, so I said to the two of them, “Sir, madam, Grandpa has helped me out before. My family is poor and I couldn't afford to attend college, so he paid my tuition fees. I'm here to thank him, but I didn't expect to see him like this…"
  • This time, I burst into tears. I almost fooled myself with my superb acting skills.
  • The middle-aged woman pursed her lips and complained, "I told you this old man is hiding money! He would rather give money to outsiders than to me. How could my father betray me like that?!"
  • Then, the middle-aged man rose from the ground and looked at me while questioning, "Do you have money to pay us back now? If you don't, you can write an IOU and pay us the money as soon as possible. My dad was old and unwise. If you take his money and run, I can sue you for fraud. Don't even try to avoid the payment!"
  • I was taken aback by the two. Not only were they unfilial, they were also living off the old man!
  • Wiping my tears away, I answered, "I will return the money, and since Grandpa is my savior, I would like to keep a vigil for him tonight."
  • "We can't refuse to let you repay his kindness anyway. Go on and keep vigil, then." As if anticipating for me to say that, she removed her mourning clothing and handed them to me. "I'll come back tomorrow morning."
  • "Linda." The man held the woman's hand and uttered, "People will talk behind your back if you leave now."
  • Smiling indifferently, Linda countered, "I don't care. If you want to pretend to be filial, you can stay." After saying that, she shook off his hand and left.
  • The man caught up with her. "Linda Lowell, do you think I don't know what your plan is? Are you going to take advantage of the vigil to sell our old man's house? Not a chance. You're already married to another man now. You don't deserve to take his money…"
  • "Pfft! I have the right to at least half the price of the house…"
  • The two didn't stop arguing while walking away.
  • Asking to keep vigil was relatively easy, but I didn't feel good at all. This woman wasn't the old man's daughter-in-law, but his daughter! What an unfilial pair of son and daughter.
  • "How could people like them exist?!" I was annoyed from the bottom of my heart.
  • "Karma will come for them eventually." Cassius walked over and said to me, "There is not much time left. Let's decorate the funeral hall first."
  • He told me to pay attention to three things tonight—one, the eternal flame lamp cannot be extinguished; two, the candle cannot be broken; three, and most importantly, we couldn't let the black cat startle the corpse again.
  • I didn't know whether there were any black cats around here, but when we arrived, I saw many stray cats loitering around. In order to prevent cats from getting close to the corpse, a funeral booth had to be set up. We also had to buy eternal flame lamps, candles, and candle holders.
  • Fortunately, Mr. Lee owned a funeral parlor, or how could a poor student like me afford to buy these decorations?
  • I then called Mindy and asked for Mr. Lee's number. I also told her that I wouldn't be going back to the dormitory tonight. Then, I called Mr. Lee again and told him what I wanted.
  • In less than half an hour, Mr. Lee came with the workers. After decorating the funeral hall, he asked me, "Are you afraid? Do you want me to stay with you?"
  • Hearing that, I couldn't help but be moved. Just as I was going to nod my head, I heard Cassius' cold voice. "No."
  • "Got it. Goodbye."
  • As I watched Mr. Lee leaving, I couldn't hold back the anger of being bullied all afternoon, so I glared at Cassius. "He's staying for me, not for you. What right did you have to stop him?!"
  • Seeing that I was exasperated, Cassius wasn't upset, but he walked up to me instead. Then, he cupped my face and lowered his head before he gazed at me. "You'll be fine with me here."
  • I was so close to him that I could clearly see the fine hairs on his face.
  • The atmosphere suddenly felt ambiguous as my cheeks warmed up and my heart raced.
  • At that moment, we heard something.
  • Meow!
  • A cat was meowing from the funeral booth!
