Chapter 4 Keep Vigil

  • Hearing that Cassius was a little upset, I quickly gathered my courage and turned to look at him. I knew he was handsome last night, but after closer inspection, his looks were exceptional!
  • The white smoke from the burning candle lingered around his body. He wore a black long-sleeved shirt with matching black pants and leather shoes. He stood in a black suit, surrounded by smoke, with a slender figure and handsome features, like a deity who had descended to earth. When I saw such a handsome face, my fear subsided significantly.
  • The thought that I would have to get along with him for a long time in the future prompted me to give a quick smile and flatter, "Mr. Deity, I promise to do more good deeds in the future to help you ascend to immortality as soon as possible."
  • Cassius glanced at me lazily. "As long as my cultivation is successful, I will write off all the grievances I have with your family."
  • I wasn't sure what kind of grievance he was referring to, so I thought I'd call my dad and ask him about it. Besides, I didn't want to stay with someone who could easily control my life and death, so I said, "Mr. Deity, don't you only come out at night? Don't let the sun consume your energy anymore. Go back and have a rest. I'll be leaving now so as not to disturb you."
  • "Do you think I'm a ghost now?" His gaze turned cold.
  • I trembled in fear, with tears almost escaping my eyes. This place was definitely not ideal for me to stay any longer! If I say something wrong, I could lose my life. This was an extremely dangerous profession!
  • "Celeste, you are my disciple, so I won't harm you, but if you treat me the same as those filthy things, I don't mind turning you into the same kind as them!" Cassius pinched my chin tight and raised my head forcefully. When I faced him, he uttered coldly, "Listen carefully. I'm not afraid of the sun. It's just that deities cannot show up in front of people under any circumstances, so I will not allow ordinary people to see me. Now that you are my disciple, you are different from ordinary people, so you can naturally see me at any time."
  • I quickly nodded and showed him a flattering smile. "Mr. Deity, I didn't mean to disrespect you. I just don't know the rules yet since I've only just become your disciple. Forgive me for my naivete."
  • After glancing at me coldly, he let go and headed toward the door. When he reached the door and saw me standing on the spot, he furrowed his brow and demanded, "Come with me." Rubbing my chin, I hurried over.
  • When I was out of the room, Mr. Lee and Mindy were nowhere to be seen. It was empty in the shop. Cassius went out of the shop with me tagging along. "Where are we going?"
  • "We're going to solve your problem."
  • I didn't understand him, so I inquired, "What problem?"
  • Isn't he the source of my problems?
  • He turned sideways and shot me an impatient look before answering, "There's a problem with your tattoo."
  • Of course, I knew that! If there wasn't, how could I have suddenly become his disciple? However, I dared not say it out loud. After pondering for a while, I uttered, "The tattooist who drew this for me is dead, and the police said he's been dead for a week, but I met him yesterday. Did I really encounter a ghost, then?"
  • Cassius didn't answer me. Instead, he instructed, "Get a cab and go to Ruby Street."
  • "Why should I go there?"
  • He glared at me as if his patience had finally worn thin, and his icy eyes showed a clear sign of displeasure. If anyone else could see him, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't say a word to me and instead would have just gotten in a cab and left by himself.
  • I couldn't tell if he just didn't talk much in general or didn't like talking to me. When I saw his cold facial expression, I realized that I no longer dared to speak, so I put out my hand to flag down a cab and went to Ruby Street.
  • Ruby Street was a run-down area with six floors. Since it was going to be demolished, most residents had moved out, leaving the housing area empty.
  • After getting out of the car, I wasn't sure if it was due to the large land area, but I could feel a chilly breeze blowing at me in the summer. I trembled a little out of fear and subconsciously hid behind Cassius.
  • He glanced at me. "Look at how promising you are. Be more daring when you come on duty with me, and don't hold me back. If you ruin my business, I'm not going to spare you."
  • Whenever a deity helped people to solve their problems, it would be referred to as taking on a task. When that task was completed, the deity would be rewarded with merit. If their task was incomplete, that would mean stopping them from gaining merit.
  • I rolled my eyes. It didn't sign up to be your disciple! If you despise me, then stop pestering me!
  • After passing several rows of old buildings, Cassius led me to a building with a funeral hall in front of the door.
  • The funeral hall was placed in the open space in front of the building that had a very simple layout. There was a black coffin, several wreaths on the left and right sides, a brazier in front of the coffin, and four yellow cushions in front of the brazier. The hall lacked a booth and an eternal flame lamp, giving it a shabby appearance.
  • At the same time, a chubby middle-aged man dressed in black, about forty years old and with a cigarette in his mouth, was scrolling his phone with one hand while throwing flowers into the brazier with the other. His nonchalant look was simply disrespectful to the deceased.
  • Does Cassius want to come here to meet this person?
  • "Do you know—" I was rendered speechless before I could complete my sentence. Another middle-aged woman dressed in black was carrying a funeral picture, and in the black-and-white photo was a skinny old man. That old man was the owner of the tattoo shop I went to yesterday!
  • The poor old man had been dead for a week. Even though it was a hot summer, his body didn't decompose, and I saw him just yesterday; the whole thing was ridiculous. So, did Cassius come here to help me solve my problems?
  • A warm sensation rushed through my chest. I suddenly thought it would be nice to have a deity with me.
  • "Tell them you're going to keep vigil tonight."
  • "What?" I couldn't believe it. The warm feeling in my heart instantly turned into ice cubes, turning my heart cold.
