Chapter 8 Not as cold as she seems

  • Andre's POV
  • "What?"
  • She rolled her eyes. "To show my deepest apologies, I'll be helping you with reviving your ranch. Just tell me what you need help with." Her words came out like it was definite and I had no choice.
  • I stared at the lady in front of me. She was different from the woman I met back then. Still cold but crazy has been added to the list. There's no way she expected me to take her up on her offer. "What are you apologizing for? You didn't do anything."
  • An eye roll was what I got in response. "I didn't but I have come to realize I've not been civil and I'll like to make up for it." My gaze intensified on her features but her confidence didn't waver.
  • "It's good that you want to make amends but I think fixing the fence will be enough."
  • She wasn't having it, she let out a heavy breath in frustration. "I don't think you understand. I want to help you. I don't know why you'd be bothered about that ranch but it must mean something to you if you aren't going to sell and I'll like to be a part of that."
  • She noticed the change in my expression and quickly added. "I'm not looking for profits." It came out with a chuckle
  • "Sadly, I'll have to turn you down." I sat up, getting a clear view of her stoic features. She was good at masking her emotions, if I offended her she hid it good because I was met with her hardened features.
  • "I just-
  • " I think you should leave. Thanks for the fruits, I'm sure Macario won't object to me having some." I took an apple from the basket and gave it a big bite. Crunching sounds filled the room and for a moment, I thought she left. I turned to where she once stood but her still there the only difference was the frown etched on her beautiful face. Her icy cinnamon, brown eyes darkened, and the turquoise room made them stand out. I was about to say something to ease the room when someone walked in. Peering over her shoulders, I was met with Macario.
  • "I had to run to town-
  • He stopped when he noticed the third person in the room. "Boss," he acknowledged her presence and turned to walk to his desk.
  • "So how is he? When can he go home?" I sensed a hint of worry in her tone
  • His gaze fell on us. "He's fine, he should be able to leave tomorrow. Luckily, you got him here in time."
  • "I need to check these out." That was when I noticed the papers in his hands. "I'm going to leave you two alone."
  • "Before I forget, I stopped by your place to see Felipe so he didn't have to worry. You don't have to say anything, he promised not to tell your parents." I couldn't help but smile. We may have fallen out and aren't as close as we use to be but he knew me well.
  • "He wanted to come. I think I convinced him but I'm pretty sure he's going to be coming over today." I groaned internally as that old man was stubborn.
  • "I need to get on this. Don't try to get up, I know how headstrong you can be." I chuckled at that and out of the corner of my eye, I saw a hint of a smile on her face but it was gone as soon as it came.
  • The room was dead silent again and this time, I didn't try to do anything about it. She looked about the room, her gaze not falling on anything interesting. She was about to leave when someone walked in. This time, we both peered to see who it was.
  • "Mi Hijo, how could this happen?" Guilt ate at my heart at the worry lines on his old face. He paled in only a couple of hours.
  • "Felipe, I'm fine." The look he gave me told me he didn't believe me. "Really," I added
  • He turned to Catalina, "Felipe told me everything, thank you for taking care of him. I have misjudged you. You are an angel. I don't know what I would have done if anything has happened to him." He turned to me, "your mother would have killed me. Which reminds me, we have to call her."
  • "I'll have to stop you there Felipe. My mother cannot know about this. You know how she is. If she finds out, she'll be worried sick and her blood pressure will go up. We don't want to worry her." I prayed he'll get me. He was loyal to my parents and could never keep anything from them and that's why he still has his job.
  • "Fine but I'm only doing this for her."
  • "I think I'll leave you two alone. I'll come back some other time." She was out the door in seconds.
  • "Now that she left, what is going on between you two?"
  • I laughed, "What do you mean?"
  • He glared at me. "Why was she with you when the accident happened?"
  • "It's nothing. We spoke about the fence though. She's getting it fixed "
  • "That's good but you don't look too happy about it."
  • Looking down at my fingers, I picked at them as I said, "she also said she wanted to help revive the ranch too but I turned her down."
  • Shuffling in his seat, he spoke. "Why would you do that?"
  • "Doesn't it seem too good to be true?" I turned my gaze to him, dropping my hands back on my thigh.
  • "When have you ever listened to me?" He said with disbelief. "You said so yourself that I judged her too quickly and seeing her today I think you may have been right. She seems like a nice soul and if she wants to help then let her. What's the worse that could happen?" He left his words to hang in the air while I took it all in. He had a point there, the worse that could happen was her asking for some interest when the ranch was on its feet again.
  • We went on, speaking about little things and how our lives had been without the other in them. Mine wasn't too great.
  • Felipe left after a couple of hours and Macario finally came out of his office. "I couldn't help but overhear your conversation with Felipe about the Boss lady."
  • "And?"
  • "I think he has a point. I'm not one to judge people, but she seems genuine. She has been with you since your injury and even tried to spend the night here. I had to practically force her to go home. Dare I say she might even like you."
  • "I think you are wrong Felipe." My mind went back to the kiss we shared.
  • "Think about it. What woman would go out of her way for a man she didn't need anything from? She couldn't possibly be after your money, she has tons of it."
  • I sighed, giving up. "I don't know, that woman is difficult to read. I wish I could know how her mind works."
  • "Why do you think she's called the devil? You can never know what she's thinking."
  • *****
  • Evening came and Felipe left in a hurry, stating he had an emergency. "Take these papers, I'll leave them with you. You remember Mariana?"
  • "The lady from the other day?"
  • "Yes, that's her. She'll be coming for these results. I don't want her going into my office and that's why I'm leaving these here with you."
  • Soon after he left, the lady dropped by. "You came. The results are out, I didn't check it so you don't need to worry. I'd give you some privacy but I'm currently bedridden." I pointed at the bed, giving a slight laugh to ease the awkward air.
  • She didn't waste a second longer on me as she grabbed the paper, ripping it open. Her eyes widened and she turned shaky with her fingers quirky. "I'm pregnant."
