Chapter 5 Death Sentence

  • The only reason I was back in this hell hole was because my mother thought it logical and wise. I arrived home a mess after the girls had salvaged what they could out of my dress. I told her about the scenario in school and the only thing she did was smile and say," it's only normal Emmy. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Tomorrow would be better."
  • There, that was the end of the discussion.
  • "You won't believe who made the headlines." Foluke said making herself comfortable on the chair next to mine.
  • Curiously, I raised a brow and watched Bisola grab a copy of what seemed to be a magazine.
  • I shrugged nonchalantly," what's so special about being in a magazine?"
  • "Firstly," Meredith cleared me, "this is no ordinary magazine, this is the Greenville High gossip review. It carries the latest news of who is cheating on who, who's dating who and recent breakups. And though, I'm not a huge fan of it, I must tell you, the secrets in here are juicy."
  • "Here," Bisola nudged a copy towards me, "read the first headlines."
  • "QUEEN BEE; MITCHELL DREW HUMILATES NEW GIRL."
  • "Okay?" That came out more like a question. "New girl could be anybody."
  • "Well yeah." Foluke drawled, "new girl could be anybody but isn't because anybody is not the one in the picture below."
  • "Oh!" I said recognition dawning on me.
  • "You're lucky," Bisola shrugged," you still look beautiful in it."
  • "Oh please." I brushed the compliment aside,"that wouldn't erase the memory of what happened yesterday."
  • "It wouldn't, but it's comforting."
  • "Like how jobless could Rosa be?"
  • "If it's spicy enough, an hundred and one percent." Meredith said making us burst into fits of laughing seizures. Especially me in particular. This was the first time I laughed since I stepped foot in school.
  • "Is it something bad?" I asked wearily," me being in there I mean."
  • "Get over it Emmy." Foluke chimed, "it's not worth sulking over. If anything, you just got popular."
  • "And two," Meredith raised a finger, "got you into Mitchell's bad book."
  • "It's all weird."
  • I dropped my shoulders. It's not been a week and yet I felt my world spiraling out of control.
  • "Why do I feel like I've been handed a death sentence?" I rolled my eyes and heaved.
  • "Oh no!" They all choroused.
  • "If there's anyone to be handed a death sentence," Bisola shrugged twirling until she stood facing Meredith," it should be Meredith."
  • "Like I did something bad." Meredith shrugged obviously unbothered.
  • "No you didn't. You did something worst. How long have you been seeing Nick?"
  • Hiding her face between her palms, Meredith tried to stifle a laugh."I really can't keep secrets from you guys , right?"
  • "Not even in your dreams."
  • I lost track of who was talking, all the while thankful for the distraction.
  • "Fine." Meredith said, her face showing signs of embarrassment "how long have you guys known?"
  • "About a week?" That was Bisola.
  • "Well, we met at..." Meredith was saying when the bell rang signalling the beginning of homeroom.
