Chapter 6 Run!

  • Luckily for Tessa, she found a taxi that was on a midnight journey to New York. She didn't have enough cash on her to take a plane.
  • At first, she was full of vigor and had a plan to follow. But, she soon remembered that she had no one where she was going. She had no place to stay for the night.
  • She contemplated for some time and decided to stay in a hotel for the night. Then, she would think of what to do when morning came.
  • By the time she arrived in New York, the time was already 6 am. She breathed in the new tranquil scent as she stepped down from the cab and was welcomed by a ‘welcome to New York city’ sign board.
  • Having nowhere to go, Tessa asked a random man at the reception of the bus top, where she could go next.
  • ‘’Wow, we have a new arrival.’’ The old man who sat behind the desk smiled at her.
  • Tessa smiled back at him. "Please I am new here, do you know where I can get accommodation? Like a hotel or something? Tessa asked with a yawn, she was tired.
  • The man smiled back. He replied, " If you want, I can take you to a pub down the road. It's not expensive."
  • Tessa was delighted to hear this.
  • ‘’I would certainly love it.’’ Tessa gave a sincere smile.
  • When the old man had rounded up with his paperwork, he drove her in his rickety Volvo car, to a pub down the street. It was not exactly crowded.
  • But, it was not deserted at all.
  • He helped her talk to the owner and a room was quickly arranged for her. She settled in and in an hour, she was beginning to doze off.
  • Although, she did not completely sleep. After all, she was in an unknown place. Surrounded by people she did not know. And, on a bed that was less durable than the one in the pack house.
  • It was also the first time she slept out since she got married to Alpha Chris. As she lay on the bed, she dreamt of the series of events that happened since she came across Chris.
  • From the happy moments of knowing him. To the moment when she caught him in bed with her sister.
  • ***
  • Early the next morning, the old man from the night before helped her secure an apartment. It was fairly cheap as the owners were going on vacation and just needed someone to maintain it.
  • Afterward, Tessa took another nap. She was becoming more tired recently.
  • Tessa woke up to the sunlight that penetrated her eyes.
  • ‘’Who left the window open.’’ She groaned as she squinted her eyes open.
  • The scene before her got her gasping in shock.
  • There was a large glassy window that gave a clear view of the forest behind the house.
  • What more could she ask for but such a view?
  • But…
  • The house still lacked something.
  • That homely feel.
  • The only money she had left with her was fifty dollars which would not even take her up to a month, especially with her pregnancy.
  • Tessa now had a life within her which was fully her responsibility. She had no mate or father of the child to run to for help. She needed a job. But how?
  • As the luna of a pack, Tessa never had the opportunity or reason to work in any Organisation. Once when she tried applying for the role of a manager in a company because of how bored and depressed she was getting at home as a result of her inability to get pregnant.
  • But Chris had stopped her from making such a decision. He rebuked her acts and decided to reduce the time he spent at his company. He also spent much more time with her, to prevent any form of sadness from creeping unto her mind.
  • Who the hell would hire a pregnant lady who had no work experience?
  • Tessa buried her face in her pillow and let out a groan.
  • The thought and imagination of what Chris would be doing with her sister, at that hour of the day, got anger creeping into her soul.
  • She could not be angry while pregnant. She knew what anger could cause to her body. Especially now that she was responsible for a life on her.
  • She imagined Chris cuddling her sister in his arms and whispering love sounds on the back of her neck. Just the same way he always did with her.
  • Tessa could not believe that Chris now had the full authority of penetrating her sister without a second thought or without being reprimanded by anyone.
  • It felt surreal that her position had now been stolen from her from a being the most trusted on the face of the earth.
  • Tessa could not keep wallowing in self-pity and expecting a waiter to serve her like she was always treated in the palace. She needed to find a job.
  • Tessa dug out the new phone she had purchased from the bedside drawer. Then, she looked on google for job applications she could apply for.
  • The post of secretary caught her attention. The name of the company was Gold Harold.
  • Tessa never had professional experience on being a secretary. But she recalled how she had indirectly taken the post of Chris’s secretary when his secretary was on maternity leave.
  • Chris had not allowed her at first. But since she was at his office and she was begging so badly, he finally allowed her.
  • Although it was half an hour of experience daily, of flipping unknown books. It had to count as something.
  • There was no way she was going to get selected for the post, but there was no harm in trying. Not for herself. But for the life of her baby.
  • HER baby.
  • After she filled out the last question on the online form, she put off her phone and the lamp beside her bed.
  • The view of the forest brought back a nostalgic feeling in her spine.
  • Chris.
  • No!
  • She could not think of him. She tried to force him out of her mind, but he remained like a birthmark plastered in her heart.
  • Tessa let out a pained scream as their loving memories kept swimming into her mind.
  • ‘Stop!’’ Tessa screamed at herself.
  • ‘Stop!’’ Tessa screamed at herself.
  • The memories…
  • The feeling of his lips pressed against hers while lying on the grass in the garden behind the mansion…
  • Taking long strolls and having funny classical dinners…
  • Laughing as he tickled her at intervals during their discussions…
  • She needed to ease out the pain of betrayal and hatred.
  • Throughout the past days, Tessa had fully neglected her wolf. But at that moment, she could feel it piercing through her skin. It wanted to be relieved. To be set free.
  • She felt like she could fight the urge, but the hurt had long penetrated her wolf. And it needed to let it out. The only way that could be done, was by giving in to its demand.
  • She felt the urge to ease out the pain she felt and start a new life and the only way to do that was by shifting into her wolf form.
  • Her window was wide open, which meant that Tessa had the full space of jumping out of the window, and into the woods.
  • It had been a long time since she last satisfied her wolf.
  • That moment was the right time to do so.
  • Without any other thought, she crawled on her hands and feet, feeling the satisfaction of her fur popping out of its pores and her bones cracking into its animal shape.
  • Tessa jumped out of the window.
  • Finally, in the woods, Tessa let out a loud howl.
  • So much pain was let out in one howl.
  • How many more could several howls do?
  • Tessa could not tell how long she had been howling and staring at the moon in the forest, but she was snapped out of it by the snapping sound of the leaves some distance ahead of her.
  • She stopped howling and could feel the presence of another being around her. Not just any being. But the scent had to be that of a werewolf.
  • Tessa followed the scent which led her deeper into the forest.
  • Her human form screamed to her to rush back to her house. But her inquisitive wolf wanted to know who else was in the forest.
  • Moving through a branch of a tree, Tessa was almost knocked down by the branch of a tree that stuck out towards her. She stood there and her gaze met with that of the creature that stood a few feet ahead. Its eyes were glowing red.
  • It was a wolf.
  • Its eyes were bloody red, as it maintained its gaze on her.
  • ‘Run Tessa, Run!’ Her inner self screamed at her, but her body did not move an inch.
