Chapter 29

  • The next time Monica woke up, she opened her eyes and groggily sat up. She noticed the cast on her arm was gone, and she moved it around, fisting and unfisting her palm. She touched her forearm. There was no pain, no nothing. She lifted her dirty blouse and examined her stomach and hip. There were no bruises and no pain to the touch.
  • Excitement boomed in her, and she jumped from the bed, running to the door. She looked around the hall, hoping to find a bathroom or a mirror, but there was none. She went to the stairs at the end of the corridor and carefully started climbing them down. This house was a mess. There was furniture that was turned around, papers, vases and photos on the ground.
  • Passing through another stair, Monica suddenly froze and took a step back. She looked at the photo on the wall, and her jaw fell agape when she saw two men, their arms around each other's shoulders. One of them—dark-haired, with brown eyes and a bud earring over his eyebrow—was wearing a funny shirt and was holding a beer in his free hand. He had a wide smile on his face, his white teeth put on display.
