Chapter 4

  • "Take us to the Belam Capital in Quebec, I'll hold a conference for the wolves once we get there." I stated to Vladislav.
  • My Beta then relayed my message to our pilot, only moments later did our small jet take off. And once again my mind drifted towards the odd man we had ran into at the Alpha Conference. He gave me a weird vibe that I couldn't really place, and he was oddly worried about me considering that we didn't even know each other.
  • Like me he seemed out of place in the meeting; he was young, early twenties I'm guessing. Nowhere near the age ranges of the other Alphas and Betas, perhaps he was someone’s child. If he was it would make sense why he asked Vladislav and I if we were some Alphas' child, we were all young enough to be. Yet, he could also be at the meeting as one of the Alphas' daughters betrothed. I knew for a fact that two or three Alphas only had daughters and betrothed their eldest daughter to someone they deemed fit to become Alpha. It seemed to be a rather common practice these days, despite having mates.
  • Shaking my head to clear my mind I turned to look at my little brother who sat across from me in a white leather chair.
  • "You're acting oddly unfocused today, Sister. I would've thought you'd be happy, considering you just took over someone's lands." Vladislav said, cocking his head to the side slightly.
  • I rolled my eyes. "I am happy, Vlad. Just annoyed, anxious and agitated."
  • A smile made its way onto Vladislav's face. "Oh? Does it have something to do with that man we ran into, Sestra? Vy nashli yego goryachim, net?" He chuckled as he teased me, asking me if I found the unknown man hot.
  • I cast him an annoyed glance. His teasing was not welcomed, especially when it was in relation to a male. The last thing I needed was for my brothers to tease me about men, just because we met someone who wasn't ugly.
  • Not that I would tell Vladislav what I truly thought of the man... But, he was rather pleasing on the eyes. His hairstyle was rather nice, the side-sweep with the sides shaved drawing attention to his rather sharp bone structure. He didn't seem to have any baby fat clinging to his face, rather his features seemed quite chiseled. And those eyes, I don't think I've ever seen anyone with such stormy gray eyes before. Looked as though the shade of gray was ever changing, shifting every moment we spoke to one another.
  • For some reason, the stranger seemed to have left a rather large impression on me. Something that didn't happen quite often either. I don't really interact with others much outside of my family. Never felt the need to, all wolves my age are rather rowdy and loud like my younger brothers. I don't wish to surround myself with further young wolves brimming with mischief. That being said I don't really remember those I meet during our first meeting, unless they have a position of importance or relevance. For this wolf, who I hadn't even bothered to request his name, to linger within my mind like this is certainly odd. Perhaps it's due to his rather pleasing features, which in comparison, make my marriage candidates look uglier than pigs?
  • I growled at him annoyed with his teasing, as I let the image of the stranger dissipate from within my mind, I was the eldest he should just be quiet! "Be silent, Beta. Wake me when we land."
  • With my eyebrows pinched in annoyance I drifted off to sleep, Vladislav's laughter echoing in the background. Unable to help it, the strangers face drifted back into view behind my closed eyes. I was quite too fixated on this wolf that I just met, a wolf that I probably wouldn't be seeing again any time soon.
  • ~~*~~
  • "Sestra, Suka, wake up. We've landed, Sestra." Vladislav said as he lightly shook me.
  • I pushed him away roughly, already annoyed that he called me a bitch. Even though I knew he was just joking, my high strung emotions put me in an awful mood. We walked out of the jet and onto a plain of grass. Belam's packs' main compound resided not too far from Lake Albanel, meaning we didn't have an airport to land at. Just lots of grass.
  • Alexei and Aaron were waiting for Vladislav and I, greeting us with a smile. "How far out are we from the compound?" I asked, Uncle Owens nowhere in sight despite having come with the invading force. "Where's Uncle Owens?"
  • "About thirty or so minutes, but that doesn't matter much. Owens went ahead with the other warriors, to make sure that the wolves would be somewhat settled before we brought you to them. Now, come on children, grab a hand. Let's portal this shit." I blinked at Aaron but didn't say much in response as I grabbed his arm.
  • In a blink on an eye we were at the edge of the compound, Aaron's portal leaving me slightly dizzy. No matter how many times I've portaled I still have yet to get used to it. Afterwards I'm often left dizzy with a slightly throbbing headache.
  • Stepping away from Aaron and my brothers I overlooked the werewolf city. The entire city was made up of small little wooden cottages, plumes of smoke puffing out of the chimneys nonstop. With their straw thatched roofs the city looked more like a small village nestled in the rolling green hills. It looked like something out of a fairy tale, or the middle ages. Humans didn't seem to make such quaint and rustic towns anymore, settling for industrialized buildings that lacked the kind of beauty that rustic architecture has.
  • Konstantin pack wolves surrounded the border of the city, keeping any Belam wolves from leaving their territory. I turned around, waving Alexei over.
  • "Round up the wolves and have them meet me in the center of town." I said to Alexei while nursing my headache.
  • Alexei nodded at me once before turning to the wolves surrounding the village. "Round up the wolves in the center of town! If anyone asks why you can tell them that they are to meet their new Alpha!"
  • Alexei went off with the warriors to round up the wolves, trailing behind Uncle Owens, while Aaron, Vladislav and I walked towards the center of town. I sat down on the rim of a fountain, pressing my dress shoe clad feet against the brown brick street that wound throughout the village. Squinting from the glare of the sun I looked down at my black shoes ready to be done with all of this.
  • "Ruslana," Aaron called, holding out a steel flask towards me. "Want some spirits to lift yours?"
  • I chuckled lightly at his joke before gladly accepting the flask, hoping that it would wash away my headache. The scotch warmed my stomach as it ebbed away the throbbing pain in my head. I nodded my thanks to Aaron just as the wolves began to flood into the town square that surrounds the fountain. They all chattered quite animatedly while I finished off the flask, the thirst within my throat now sated. Did nothing for the hunger within the pit of my stomach though.
  • Unsurprisingly many of the wolves were resisting or protesting, walking about with a clamor. I stood up on the rim of the fountain, planting my feet flat against the tan bricks allowing me to look out over the pack. There were quite a few wolves gathered here, perhaps a hundred or so, and it made me wonder about how many wolves I just consumed into my pack.
  • "Silence!" I called out loudly over the wolves, pleased when their chattering ceased as they looked up at me. "Belam is no longer your Alpha or your pack. You are now all Konstantin wolves, and I, Alpha Ruslana-Slava, am your Alpha. I have already killed your Alpha, for the offense he dealt me by invading my lands, and have taken away your Alpha family for execution on my compound whenever I see fit." I paused, taking a deep breath of the fresh Canadian air.
  • A few outraged cries were shouted aloud, the clamor once again returning. "The Konstantin pack? That small pack that's barely on the map?"
  • I gritted my teeth, ignoring the statement while letting them absorb the information. "The other Alpha's let Belam get killed?"
  • "I won't have a little girl as my Alpha!" Someone yelled.
  • I growled out loudly at the lot of them, my chest quaking from the vibrations. "Your Alpha disrespected me and my lands. Following the laws of war I offered evidence of him trespassing on my lands and then challenged him to a one on one duel. I bested him in combat and took his life, automatically giving me rights to all his lands. If any of you wish to challenge me, do it now!" I yelled out the last sentence, fed up how all these adult wolves seemed to whine like puppies.
  • Where was the outrage? The anger? Their need to spill my blood at killing their Alpha? I had been hoping to see a little bit of a blood bath... After all, I hadn't had nearly enough time to play with their Alpha before coming here. My blood lust was raging with the need to be sated, to taste fresh blood against my claws and jaw.
  • Just as I finished my inner dialogue a wolf tackled me, his jaw gaping wide before latching onto my hip and sending us both sprawling into the fountain. My men made no movements to help me; they recognized the maniac haze that had filtered through my eyes that they often saw on my mother when she was in an itch to kill. As the water splashed around me my blood filtered into the clear water, staining it red. The cold water made the blood weep from my wound quicker, the icy liquid numbing the torn flesh.
  • Smiling wickedly down at the wolf I reached for his jaws, prying his mouth open with my bare hands. I threw him off of me quickly, not paying my hands any mind as his canines bit into my flesh. He whined as he smashed into the rim of the fountain, looking up at me as I stood and motioned for him to come at me. Blood dripped down my thigh from my wound, yet even so, I smiled widely while barely holding back my laughter.
  • A dull ache resounded from my hands, from where the wolfs teeth had nipped at my flesh. The skin was torn, my knuckles busted. Blood flowed freely down my left hand, paling quickly. Yet just with my thigh wound I paid them no mind, too focused on the wolf who chose to fight me.
  • I was soaked from head to toe in freezing weather but adrenaline rushed through my blood in a delicious way, heating me up. The wolf charged me again, this time aiming for my femoral artery on my left thigh. Once he was close enough I reared back my right leg and kicked him in the chest. My foot slammed into his chest, the force of the kick caving in his chest cavity. As his sternum collapsed I kept forcing my foot into his chest, using the momentum of both my kick and his attack to send him flying. I punted him out of the fountain, watching as he sailed through the air. He whined as he flew through the air and I lifted a hand to my brow staring at him as he went.
  • I watched him fly with mock awe, allowing my mouth to fall agape. "Hole in one!" I cried out in mock surprise as he flew through a window of a nearby house. "Anyone else?" I called out as I stepped out of the fountain, paying my wounds no mind.
  • The wolves looked between me and the shattered window nervously before they settled on making no response. Or so I thought. I had turned my back to the lot, picking at my thigh wound with distaste when Alexei called out.
  • "Ruslana, behind you!"
  • I quickly turned around, only to see a silver sword swinging in my direction. I allowed my left leg to collapse, sending me dropping to the ground in a crouched position. The silver sword swung through empty air where my head had been only moments before. Shifting on my feet I rolled to the right, jumping up into a standing position out of harm’s way.
  • A nearby Konstantin wolf chucked a sword at me, which I caught with my right hand without hassle. Grinning, I looked at the wolf before me. He was thin and seemed to hold the sword confidently despite his rather lacking physique. The wolf glared at me, gripping his sword tightly with two hands as he swung at me.
  • I might be able to have some fun with this one. I thought to myself with a grin, meeting his strike with my sword.
  • Blow after blow I matched his strikes with a block, never hesitating nor staggering. Growing bored playing defense I pushed forward, sending the wolf off balance. As he stumbled I struck out with my sword, nicking him in his abdomen. He flinched, yet still prepared to meet my next attack. I slammed my sword down from a high arc, forcing our blades to lock in an 'X' just mere inches away from his face.
  • "A little close for comfort, no?" I mocked as I forced our swords closer to his face, his arms shaking from effort.
  • I suddenly pulled my sword back, the sudden lack of pressure making the wolf lose his grip on his sword. Taking that into account I slammed my sword down hard on his, watching as the blade flew from his grasp. He scrambled after the sword, only to stop as it slid under one of my wolfs boot clad foot. Walking up slowly behind him I set the blade of my sword against his shoulder, causing him to freeze in his actions.
  • "Submit or die, wolf." I stated simply, offering him a way out.
  • The wolf turned to look towards me, hate burning within his eyes. That kind of look had me cocking my head to the side, questioning what I ever did to him.
  • Did I kill someone he loved? Or did he wish to not be ruled over by a female Alpha this fiercely?
  • The wolf seemed to think about it for a moment before he spat at me. I looked down at where his spit landed, just below the collar of my white dress shirt.
  • I clicked my tongue at him a few times, tsking, in annoyance. "Now that, that wasn't all that nice." With that I pulled my sword back before stabbing it straight through his chest, piercing his heart.
  • The wolf twitched for a few moments before he fell against the brick street, all life fleeing from within his eyes. I slowly pulled my sword from his body, wiping the blood off on my pants before returning it to its owner. Walking over to the fountain I rinsed my hands off in the clear area of the water, allowing the water to numb the torn flesh of my left hand. Splashing some on my face I cleared my skin of any blood that may have found itself there. All the while that increasingly familiar burning sensation etched its way across my back, as though someone was carving into my flesh with hot iron.
  • As I unbuttoned my shirt I turned towards the crowd of wolves, pulling off the soiled shirt. My white undershirt was now in view, only some blood splatters staining it from leaking through my dress shirt. Finished, I looked out at the crowd of wolves searching for any rebellious gazes. The lot of them in general looked scared shitless, as well as slightly sick. Seems as though the Capital of this pack hasn't seen combat for a long while. Satisfied with the lack of rebellious wolves I nodded to myself before waving off the pack, letting them go about their business.
  • "Alexei," I called, drawing his attention away from horsing around with Vladislav. "Stay here at this pack for a few days, organize it how we do back at home. Once you get a good feel for the wolves come back home while leaving someone trustworthy in charge. If you don't like any of the high ranking wolves you can fire them or kill them and choose others. Just get the job done."
  • "No problem, Alpha." He responded, inclining his head slightly at me before taking a handful of wolves with him before disappearing within the crowd of wolves.
  • Turning back towards Vladislav and Aaron I said, "Now, let's go home. I'm sure there's plenty of work for me between the conniving Elders and my ascension ceremony."
